Fry + Laurie or Smith + Jones?

Which is your favourite double act?

Smith & Jones were very funny when they had 'Alas' in their title, but Fry & Laurie were more clever, original and wittier.

Well, the guest stars were forced on them by BBC, and series 4 was too soon after Fry's nervous breakdown, which seems to have cast a bit of a pall on the entire enterprise. Yes, Control had to fire Tony in series 3. Peter and John were so, so funny, and I also loved the Bishop and the Warlord.

Well, Fry had his breakdown in mid-February 1995, a week or two after the prefilmed series began broadcast. Because the work on the series was already thus done, the breakdown had no effect on the filming itself. If anything it was more a contributing factor to the breakdown in the form of exhaustion, but that's speculation on my part.

The recovery period on the other hand is the most likely reason why the series never came back, must be a difficult memory of those times for all involved. He hasn't completely recovered ever, as in he was diagnosed with cyclothymia, a form of bipolar disorder. Last year he attempted a desperate thing again, as per the BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22782913

Smith & Jones were good actors but a bit 'generic'. They could play most types of characters but I never got the impression of any personality behind it.

Whereas Fry and Laurie gave much more of themselves in their sketches, if that makes any sense.

And yes, Smith & Jones employed a writing team, whereas Fry & Laurie wrote every word themselves.

She's really Tyler Durden/Keyser Soze/A Man/A Ghost/Dreaming/His sled

Fry and Laurie hands down. Kicking Ass, The Protest song, Where is the Lid, Go Johnny every time I think of songs like these I start laughing all over again.I loved the endings where Fry would make crazy drinks for the quest(s) who had been on and Hugh Laurie played the piano. What a funny series.
