I might see this but...

what was so bad about that particular scene that gave it its rating and whats this I hear about a Toy scuba diver?

I'm not stupid i'm just holding back my potential!

reply

The scene was pretty bad- Victoria Abril was sat in a bath with her legs open and we see a little toy scuba diver swim up between her legs and the look on Ms Abril's face can fill in the rest of what happens!

reply

Its a great movie!! you def should watch it.

Can anybody explain to me what was "bad" about that scene...
There's absolutely nothing wrong with this film and you should definitely see it.

A film should be like a pebble in your shoe.

reply

the scene was just so stupid and pointless. Do woman actually use childrens scuba diver bath toys for self plessure?
I can only presume the answer is no.

reply

The scene is great. It's funny and beautifully shot. I can't understand how anybody could not like it. Of course, if only you are not some stupid american hypocrite.

reply

I guess that makes you must be some stupid non-american hypocrite? Just because someone doesn't like the scene for whatever reason doesn't make them a hypocrite. I always chuckle at people who think they are always right and feel the need to denigrate or insult different viewpoints rather than just agreeing to disagree.

reply

Well I've got egg on MY face.

I just used a child's scuba diver toy for self pleasure and it was friggin' awesome.

reply

I thought it was hilarious.

(shrug) Oh well, to each their own.

There's nothing "bad" about it... it's beautiful.

Although some parts could be considered too hardcore and edgy for some people, this really is a good movie and an awesome love story. Definitely see it.

reply

Don't watch it. It could scar you for life. The scuba diver is evil.

reply

there wasn't anything evn slightly disturbing about this movie.

reply

Just watched it in DVD. I don't understand why it was rated in X originally and then NC-17. Though that bath scene is not important at all in the movie, I don't have any problem with it. Just a little game played in the bath to relax after a day of work.
(I was just , maybe a little , when seeing this scene. But that's it.)

In general, it's lovely movie.

reply

I might see it just because I get off on bondage. But here in this horrible america, movie ratings are not objective, but are made by a panel of withered old religious people who impose their own "moral" and political beliefs when rating films. That's why "easy rider" got an X rating for a one-second flash of breast, and why mass-murdering violence and horrible torture will never cause an X rating.

The TV rating system is much more rational with multidimensional ratings, but literally no one uses it because it's so complex and because no one really gives a damn about limiting their OWN family's options, only the options of everybody else.

Just watched this again on DVD after 15 years... it's a great movie ! Looking back at it I don't really get the US rating system.. hopefully it has changed !The Benelux version has an extra with an interview/discussion between Banderas & Almodovar on the movie.. very interesting !
The only scene where there is actual nudity is indeed the bath tub (which funnily enough Almodovar & Banderas comment as an "ode to Cousteau") but indeed, as somebody said, has no actual importance in the movie, if it isn't as just to give a hint that the main character (Abril) "may" have a tendency for the perverse (after all she's also a porn actress in the movie.. so ..)
The first & eventual NC rating was given apparently for the sex scene where indeed it is very intense and honest (and more real than any sex scene I have ever seen in another movie) but hey.. Almodovar doesn't show anything.. no breasts, no genitals ! The only thing that is actually shown is at the end when you see a kind of reflection of the couple on the bed but it is in a 8-fold mirror and from very far..

Believe me, the movie is certainly worth seeing ! (and not at all for the "sex" scenes)

PS: As commented on the dvd: Disney brough out " The beauty and the beast" where the Beast actually captures Belle and hold her hostage until she loves him.... quite a similar story don't you think? (but then this is about a beast.. and no NC rating ;-))

reply

Uhmm never thought about that... the comparison with the Beauty and the Beast. Quite interesting. The difference is that the Beast isn't as hot as Antonio Banderas. He looks so damn good in that movie.

But then again, using the American rating standards, the Beauty and the Beast might have earned a NC rating. If you think about it, it is some weird type of zoophilia. But it is Disney and it is a cartoon with songs so I guess it doesn't count.

reply

Crazy americans letting a cartoon about zoophilia be aimed at kids when they give Tie me up Tie me down an X rating.

reply

Oh please, Beauty VOLUNTEERED to take her father's place at the Beast's castle, and he couldn't possibly have forced her to love him.

reply

That scene was funny in my opinion and how can frontal nudity upset anyone in the 21st century?
I couldnt care less about ratings because the ALWAYS change over time, what was a total shocker back then isnt anymore and the ratings get changed eventually for example hitchcock's psycho etc.

And some people ask if women really use toy scuba divers for that?
No of course not no woman in the world has ever used any object for that!

reply

No importance in the movie?? according to what and who?
if you mean it doesn't serve the narrative or plot, then I have to inform you that movies are not (only) about plots and narrative. There is much more to a film than that. And the director (a good one) would use the scenes, and every other element in the film, to deliver his ideas and views (not "message"- a stupid word

So before you say it "wasn't important", make sure you really got the film, and got what the filmmakers were trying to do in the film at hand.
Thank you.
