4/10. Here's why:

YUME is an anthology divided into 8 segments. SUNSHINE THROUGH THE RAIN is good, specially because of its ending. THE PEACH ORCHARD is too clichéd. THE BLIZZARD is slower than it should be and it has a terrible music score. THE TUNNEL takes way too much time to tell something so clear. CROWS manages to be the best of the segments because of how it recreates Van Gogh's paintings, even though the protagonist is basically hollow. MOUNT FUJI IN RED is just the first act of a story, so it feels incomplete. THE WEEPING DEMON is just an excuse to preach, and it's worst considering that the previous segments were a lot more subtle with their messages. VILLAGE OF THE WATERMILLS has the same problem the previous segment had but without the cool visuals, which is why it's the worst of the group.

Any thoughts?

I totally disagree on every account.

This was a movie about DREAMS. It wasn't proselytizing, just telling Kurosawa's impressions both consciously and subconsciously on things he's thought of and dreamt of.

This isn't a very good critique, and in fact misses the whole point of the film.

Who said anything about proselytizing?

You did in your quote.

What, what I said about THE WEEPING DEMON being preachy?

reply

is just an excuse to preach, and it's worst considering that the previous segments were a lot more subtle with their messages.

Maybe you need to think about what you said.

I did before I posted it. So?

Why did you feel Mount Fuji in Red is the first act of a story? It's a pretty open and shut dream. Also disagree on The Tunnel taking too much time.

reply

MOUNT FUJI IN RED felt like it was just starting when it ended. It's not the same as an open end (those do do make the story feel complete).
