Am I being dense...?

I've just finished watching Swordsman and whilst enjoying it thoroughly, I was so confused by the end! I got the basic jist in that the sifu wanted the scroll for his own means and basically by the end I got who wanted it and just about why. But not who everyone was. I'll admit to being confused about who was Han Chinese and who was of the Hua Mountain school, and quite who the women with big hats and snakes were lost me completely. And when Jackie Cheung and his men went into the inn and the Hua Mountain School lot were upstairs, who did Cheung's lot go around killing. And while I know Cheung stabbed himself so he could intiate his identity ruse - but who is meant to have stabbed him?!
Was anyone else as confused as I am after their first watch or am I just being dense?
That said, it's a couple of hours of a good knockabout with beautiful cinematography.

Dude. I think the film was made as an adaptation of a rather lengthy book. Lots of condensing.
If I was you I would watch it again and it will become clear. I saw it whilst on holiday in Hong Kong and was so impressed I stumped up the £2 it cost for the VCD the very next day :S

sing-a-long to the theme tune!
