Scared the s**t out of me when I was a kid.

Looking forward to watching it again and probably realising how stupid it was haha

I remember seeing it,it scared me too but was really good Jim Henson had a incredible talented imagination

It is pretty sadistic for a supposed "children's movie". Even now I'm like "wow" at some of the stuff that was in this movie for a kid.

Time for Retribution.

They softened it up for the movie. The book is way scarier for kids. Like Luke stays a mouse. Bruno's father has him drowned by the janitor after he turns into a mouse.
But oddly enough Roald Dahl was appalled by the terror in the movie. He even threatened to pull his name from credits.
He ended up never allowing any movie adaptation of his books again and put it in his will. It stated certain guidelines had to be followed (very strict rules).
Only one movie has followed these and was allowed to be made since his death ( Tim Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory").

reply

Really? I heard he was only annoyed at the Hollywood ending the film got when Luke turned human again and that's why he never allowed any more adaptations to be made (although I saw a poster for Esio Trot the other day so maybe the ban has been lifted now)

reply

REALLY!?!? Bruno's dad has him drowned in the story? $h!t that's sadistic. I better read that.

I could never watch this movie again. It didn't just scare me, it TRAUMATIZED me. I'd say it's definitely partially responsible for my huge snake phobia. I watched at school (I don't remember what year I was in at the time) and was MASSIVELY disturbed by it. Now I'm nearly 26 and enjoy horror video games and some psychological horror movies but this film is still a huge NOPE.

I saw it at school too. I remember being so horrified and disturbed I thought the teachers were showing us an adult film by mistake. I asked to leave but I was told I had to stay so I spent the rest of the film with my fingers in my ears and my eyes closed. I still, at 35, have no desire to ever watch this film again.

reply

Haha, me too!

I just read that they're making a new adaptation of the book with Robert Zemeckis directing. Reading that just brought back all kinds of memories of how scared and disturbed I was by this as a kid. I looked at some of the pictures and it must have had a lot to do with the makeup work.

Me too, this film, Empire of the Sun, It, and Jaws all scared me as a kid.
