Your dream cast if this ever gets remade

I know the subject of this movie getting remade has been talked about numerous times and it doesn't seem to be getting closer to becoming a reality, but for the sake of curiosity, if you could cast any actors/actresses in the remake of this film, who would you cast? (If they do remake this movie, I hope it stays closer to the source material than the movie)

Here is a list of the major characters and the actor/actress I would cast in the role:

Luke: unknown actor
Bruno: unknown actor
Luke's Grandmother: Judy Dench
Hotel manager: Rowan Atkinson (the only cast member from the original movie I would bring back)
Grand High Witch: Catherine Zeta-Jones

Every other character in the book is not a major contributor to the story, so I don't really care who gets cast in the roles. I am only concerned with the main characters. Also, keep in mind, in the book, the Grand High witch did not have an assistant, so the character played by Jane Horrocks in the 1990 movie would not be in the remake.

Catherine Zeta Jones doesn't have the acting chops for The Grand High Witch. Judi Dench is a brilliant choice for the Grandmother though.

If he was still as young as he was in the Sixth Sense and A.I. I'd have cast Haley Joel Osment as the kid. In the book the kid had no name. They had to give him a name for the movie because the book was told from the kid's perspective.

perhaps you are correct in saying she does not have the acting chops to pull off such a great character (especially after Angelica gave such a memorable performance), but in terms of visually, Catherine Zeta-Jones always stuck in my mind as the perfect choice.

I could see Helen McCrory playing The Grand High Witch.

I love the original cast:)

As for remake, I think that Eva Green would be perfect for Grand High Witch. Julia McKenzie would make a great Grandmother. As for Hotel Manager, how about Ewen Bremner. Bruno's parents: Nicholas Rowe and Susanne Burden can do well snobs. And if assistant gets to the movie again, I'm thinking Juno Temple. And I'd love to see Beverley Polcyn as part os the cast as some old witch. I'm not sure about the boys, could be unknown or known actors, I don't know. As long as they have some talent.

Anjdlica Huston and Rowen Atkinson again.

Atkinson could still be Mr. Stringer the hotel manager, but Huston is too old now. The Grand High Witch with her face mask on is supposed to look like a younger attractive woman, like Huston was in this movie.

Huston is looking great for her age these days but she can't pull off the look she had in this now.

Just read a Rolling Stones interview from October 2013 about Guillermo Del Toro and he states in the interview that his screenplay adaptation of Roald Dahl's "The Witches" is complete and he gave it to Roald Dahl's daughter who read it and said it was the best adaptation of her father's book she could imagine. I really hope Del Toro steps away from the "Pacific Rim" franchise and gets this done already.

All good choices, how about Helena Bonham Carter as the Grand High Witch?

reply

My choice too for Helena Bonham Carter as the Grand High Witch, took the words right out of my mouth. Rowan Atkinson as the hotel manager again, he was brilliant. Don't know about any good child actors to play Luke, Susan Boyle as the grandmother :)

It's happening:
Anne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch. Interesting but she's never done a villain before.
