I like movies like this that let the audience make connections and allow us to see the ambiguities that are so irritating in real life, ambiguities that people don't normally want to see in movies. Fantasy, adventure, some comedies--yeah, you expect simplistic characters in those. But I favor dramatic movies that appear to have real people in them--not superheroes parading as average people. And of course, it helps that Sean Bean's acting was spot-on and he was gorgeous through the whole thing too....just sayin'.
