Anyone agree that William Defoe was chilling in this?


I certianly did. The way he was sexually assualting Laura Dern seemed very real, like that's how it happens in real life. He reminded me very much of Frank Booth in Blue Velvet. That's what I love about Lynch's films. As weird as they are, they are also horrifically real.

IMO it's one of his most memorable roles together with "Platoon" and "To live and die in LA". He must have studied some real life character or he manages to live himself into the role so well that he becomes that person for the duration of the take. One of the best and among my personal favorite actors.

Poor laura dern. He was intensely creepy. I wanted sailor to kill him for sexually assaulting her but he never found out.
