I certianly did. The way he was sexually assualting Laura Dern seemed very real, like that's how it happens in real life. He reminded me very much of Frank Booth in Blue Velvet. That's what I love about Lynch's films. As weird as they are, they are also horrifically real.

Bobby Peru is one of the most amazing characters Lynch has ever brought to the screen. Down to the last details; his teeth, his accent, his dialogue, his sadistic nature, demeanor and definitely chilling.

This was a big stretch for Dafoe, but he pulled it off. One of the most disturbing and realistic characters ever, he actually reminded me of an amalgam of some of the menacing and damaged people I met while living on the road. I find the scene in the hotel room with Dern almost unbearable. He's like some terrifying and weirdly hypnotic reptile. Unforgettable.
Dafoe completely steals the show away from some great performances. He might have become used goods as the "creepily eccentric supporting character" type, but his work here (complimented compellingly of course by the powerful look and fabulously idiotic laugh) is an obvious reminder of the actor's strength as a side-man.

I saw Willem Dafoe's Bobby Peru at first as David Lynch's take on film director John Waters in his first scene, he resembles him so much. Perhaps there was an undercurrent of that, but he became a reptilian, bone-chilling predator, a desert scavenger, and his death scene was gut-wrenching to say the least.

Yes. I agree about the scene where he's hurting Lula. Sounds daft but his revolting teeth really gave me the creeps!
