Did they actually have real sex?
Or was it just acting?
shareNo in the "uncut" or "director's version" they really did have sex. At least the main girl and Mickey Rouke did. You see him going in and out of her quite clearly.
shareWould they use a body double for the sex scenes?
That would relieve the stars of the stygma of having 'done it' on camera while giving the audience the cheap thrill.

And why is that so important to you?
Besides, no, they did not have real sex as you can read in the Trivia section.
astat-2, you're a prude. what is wrong with someone asking if they had real sex or not?
shareWhat does it change, whether the sex was real or not?
shareThat's like asking what does it change if an actor does their own stunts, or uses a double.
It is interesting trivia, and also interesting to know if the actors are doing it for real (stunts, or boning), and not just using movie tricks.
Exactly.

The scene was widely rumored in the media to have shown the two actors—who had become romantically involved during production of the film—actually having intercourse. Both actors denied this but the director was ambiguous.[3] The uncut version of the film was released to video; both cuts of the film are available on MGM's DVD release.
How can I figure out which version of the film I have? I have the German VHS tape from 1990 or 1991 and the European DVD from 2007. The sex scene is as long as Paradise's "Love Theme". So is there any difference in length?
shareWell....supposedly Carrie says it wasn't. (2004)

Of course she'll say that because it's better for her career. A rumour about real sex scenes is already a risky thing, it might get you some attention but might also put you in the wrong bracket for a lot of producers, directors and critics. As long as it is a rumour, the advantages might offset the disadvantages. But if she confirmes, then a) there's no reason anymore to discuss this topic (less interest and attention) and b) people WILL put her in a bracket that she doesn't want to be.
Same with Chloe Sevigny and her BJ scene in "The Brown Bunny". She is a good actress but if she confirmes it was a real scene, she would most likely not get a good role again like in "Boys don't cry".
That makes no sense....the brown bunny scene was undeniably real. Wild Orchid was not macro close ups.

It looked fairly fake to me. I have no doubt the two of them had offscreen sex on a regular basis, but the movements they did didn't look restricted enough for penetration to be involved.

Why would they need to have real sex for the movie?
"Cool will get ya dead." -Former NBA Power Forward, Karl Malone
Look at it this way. The movie came out in 1989. It's almost the year 2013 and people are still talking about the sex scene at the end of the movie. And was the sex real. That's 24 years of talking about it.
Was it real? I don't know. It looked real enough. What sold it for me was Carrie Otis facal reaction at the start of the scene when she smiled as they were having sex. To showed a lot of emotion in that scene. In fact she showed more emotions in that scene then she did in the rest of the movie.
Now if you want to see a movie where the sex was real. Then see the movie 9 Songs. There is no question that all the sex scenes were real. I was told about it and found it on Netflicks. I thought to myself that no actor would have sex on film with another actor unless it was a porn. I even thought to myself that not even two actors where are married would have sex on film. But there it was. Two actors having sex with each other. And not just one time at the end of the movie. They had 9 different sexual acts with each other.

Who cares? Far more interesting is the sex scene with the very hot Bruce Greenwood!
