At the moment it has a 4.0 from about 1500votes. I think this film definately deserves a hihjer rating. It's one of the most (if not THE most) erotic film I've ever seen. Beside that, the film has pretty much substance although it's very sublte.

Two years passed since you asked this question (your post is from 2005) and this movie still has 4.0... It seems that you overrate it, most viewers probably find it pretty boring.
In my opinion this movie deserves 6.0 beacuse of its great soundtrack.
Well, this movie has the problem that the sex scenes are too tame if you see this film for the sex but still too graphic and numerous if you switch in for a psycho-drama-love-story.
Besides, if a certain amount of sex & nudity is shown, people tend to get stupid give the movie bad ratings by default without giving the movie a real chance. It's almost as if it was forbidden to give an erotic movie anything more than a 5. Just look at "Show Girls". The script wasn't the best but it was definately not as bad as all those people try to tell you and it had lots of very erotic scenes, especially all the dancing scenes including the lap dance.
When I was a young teen this was my fav movie, kind of weird choice for a 14 year old girl but it's true, I thought Carre Otis was the most beautiful girl ever.
Well now I can all his flaws and cliches in a crude light of many years that have passed, but even then I think that are worse movies nowdays with higher ratings. I prefer this than any of those Rom-coms that seem to fill the cinemas nowdays.
This movie belongs to another time, No one you dare make a movie like this with a straight face now.

Carre' Otis was laughably bad in this horrible film. From the 1st scene where she is obviously reading the cue cards (it does get a little better when she is not speaking) to the very end. She is terrible.
shareI agree! This movie is very memorable and the ratings on IMDB are unfair. It has some flaws, but it's an escape and beautifully captures Rio De Janeiro. Mickey Rourke is close to his prime in this and the chemistry between the leads is great.
The best thing about the movie is the music and cinematography and the to see a movie that explores sexuality. Hollywood would usually rather make a movie featuring violence and killing and it's rare to see a movie that explores this topic and is not pornography. Wild Orchid was a bigger box office success in Europe where audiences are more open minded.
I agree this movie is underrated it was an interesting film worth seeing at least once.
shareI totally feel you on this. I saw this movie a while back and always had fond memories of it. Its has a very cool mysterious and erotic vibe without being dirty. The whole carnival in Rio sort of vibe is great. Carrie Otis is also sexy as the coy lawyer. Underrated for sure.
