Well when I watched it the first time, I was shocked at how bad it was. I couldn't believe I sat through it all without turning the channel.
I was kind of traumatised by it lol. So much so that I re watched it ! I had to figure out what the whole point of this film was, why was it given the go ahead to be made in the first place. It was sort of driving me crazy.
So after watching it again I came to this conclusion: (which I explained in a review years ago on my old IMDB account which I deleted 5 years ago)
I think the moral of the story is trust, insecurity and fear of abandonment. Fear of being rejected for who you really are, fear for being abandoned yet again after never really dealing with it and all of it started in his childhood; as it does for most people who suffer with these sort of issues.
I think what the director was trying to do was build up to this revelation, but in a really bad way.
When James opens up to Emily he talks about his childhood, the difficult relationship with a parent; the father in this case.
About his time at school, where the teachers thought he was retarded, a form of bullying; suggesting he was unpopular in school also due to the fact he left school early ?
He worked hard and made something of himself despite this struggle with these issues, and once he was wealthy the women started to take notice.
Meaning, were the women suddenly coming for him or his money ? Were they interested in him or his money ?
And of course with this fear he refuses to open up and fall in love because the constant wondering of it all, the inability to believe or take a risk.
And of course it all became a way of life, it was all he knew.
But of course with this being a movie it had to end and he finally allows himself to fall in love and they both live happily ever after !
That's what I made of it anyway.
Something like this:
Once upon a time there was a boy who had a hard childhood, full of despair and hardships, and then he grew up and became rich and prosperous. He fell in love with a fair maiden and they rode away on a horse together in the sunset, or in this case a motorbike !
Was all the sexual content really needed ? I don't think so but the director obviously did.
Did it need to be so trashy and awful ? I don't think so but then what do I know !
