Most memorable scene in the movie, for me at least.....

is the part where John Wilson (Huston) has the fist fight with the bigoted British Officer. Of course, Wilson is in the right. He's doing it because he is outraged that the Officer's bigotry. But there is a realistic outcome: you may be in a fight for a righteous cause, but that's no guarantee that you are going to win the fight. And also, sometimes you have to fight for a cause even if it is a losing battle. Even though Wilson is a tough man, he is probably not going to be much of a match for an actual soldier, someone who is professionally trained to fight. It is admirable that the Officer had to knock Wilson down umpteen times before Wilson finally gave up.

I love that scene, especially Wilson's explanation afterwards, "You have to fight, and even if you lose, you feel good about it." A valuable lesson in life!

Good point, except that he's not an of officer, he's the hotel manager. He may have been an officer at one point, and he is much bigger than Eastwood as well.

reply

Oh, i thought he was wearing a military suit. But still, you win some and you lose some, no matter what the fight is over.

My favorite part is when he tells the lady the "she's the ugliest G** D*** B**** he's ever laid eyes on."

reply

^me too. But they're both good scenes, WHBH is one of the rare cases where I preferred the first half, most good movies (which I consider it to be) have it the other way around.

my favorite scene is at the dinner table when he forbids someone to talk about his quest to kill an elephant and equates it with talking about his mother's sex life? another great scene is the one when he states it's a sin to kill an elephant. and the one where he talks about his african hunting guide. these scenes and others have some great theatrical dialogue which eastwood pulls off quite well.

The deceptively beautiful "Mrs. MacGregor" reveals her true colors (Nazi) saying Hitler should have killed all the Jews. She was put down decisively with a story, but a penetration of her nether oriface would have been more appropriate.

Yeah good scene/dialogue

also the first movie I've seen where Clint loses a fist fight, go figure. But the guy was pretty big.

The fight and the confrontation with the bigot lady were excellent scenes. Wilson, as crazy as he was, was still far more humane than most of the "normal" Hollywood folk.
