underrated

I think this is one of Eastwood's best films and doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

Absolutely.

I think it's unknown and underrated, actually. Most casual Clint fans that I know have never even heard of it and the general public seem equally clueless. A shame. Oh, and I love WH, BH's final shot. In fact, as final shots go I'd put it up there with the endings of Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby in terms of thematic meaning, irony and emotional power.

Yeah, it's jaw-dropping. Other brilliant shots to close Eastwood's directorial films include the Stranger mystically dissolving into the desert's heat waves at the end of High Plains Drifter, and the camera pulling back into the low Phoenix sunset at the end of The Gauntlet, with seemingly the very city itself having been chastened.

Also, the moon tracking shot to end Space Cowboys ...

I'm agree! Wonderful director, wonderful cast and a very interesting story
I like this movie very much!
It deserves more attention

Agree with the previous posters here. A strangely overlooked film. And yes.. the ending is gripping. Quality cinema.

Glad to see I'm not alone on this one. One of my favorite films of all time. Stays true to the book and is equally entertaining. Hats off to Jeff Fahey as well.

True. One of his best efforts. Directing and acting.

It definitely is. I was surprised that it did not get any academy nominations even though its from the same team that did later Unforgiven.
WH,BH is a great classic, acting & directing is superb.

I just gave it eight stars and wish more people would to drag that 6.3 star average up. This movie was very interesting, intense, and moving. I'd never heard about it until I was looking at an Eastwood filmography. It jumped out at me exactly because I had never heard of it. Then, after I watched it, I was scratching my head over its obscurity. But considering the average movie-going audience, I guess the "subject" isn't fodder for the masses. One of those hidden gems.

I'll give a mention to Play Misty for Me, Eastwood's first film, for a neat final shot. The camera shows the deceased Evelyn and then pulls way back - Evelyn fades into the beautiful landscape of Monterey. You can see the influence of Don Siegel here.

Yes this is one of my favorite movies ever Clint is a fabulous actor and director also

I'm not sure where to place this one, a bunch of great lines and scenes with an interesting performance from good ol' Clint but the whole thing was a bit iffy.

It's pretty decent, not much more. Underrated? Nah.

It's a very good film.
