general questions about WYRM

I'm 25 and on Thanksgiving day I was out driving around when I saw a young man about my age on the roadside in a wheelchair. He had a dog to aid him and I felt incredible sympathy for him. For whatever reason, that triggered the memory of me watching this TV movie when I was about 11. I only saw the last half of it from what I vaguely remember and would love to see it again. Wasn't there a scene where "Mike" falls out of his bed or his wheelchair and the nurse neglects to help him up? What's really sad is the story is based on a true experience. I remember something about him getting out of that place in the end, and I'm curious if anyone knows if the real Mike Mills is still living.

The real Mike Mills/Smith is no longer alive he died at the age of 21. He was my cousin

I am not sure if the other person is telling the truth! you can't trust anyone on the internet and some people will say anything to get attention.

From what I understand Mike was not quite 18 when he died. He died a few months after leaving the nursing home. I could be wrong, I will have to re-watch the movie to freshen up my facts. I have the movie recorded becuz it is so rare to catch it on. I really hope they release it on v.h.s or dvd that would be great. I also undertood his last name wasn't even Mills it was Smith. There was a scene where he came to Nurse Cooder and told her he wasn't feeling well and she sent him back to his room where he fell out the chair unconscience.

From what I understand, the film was heavily fictionalized for legal reasons. I remember reading on the Net that the real Michael-Patrick Smith had actually lived in several nursing homes, and the movie is a compilation of events.

It is however an excellent movie and the actors play their roles with great dedication. Nurse Cooder delivers the best "Nurse Ratchet" impersonation I have ever seen! All of the actors did a fine job and I have learned that many of the extras were actual mental patients.

While the Movie, as are all movies, was somewhat fictionalized for various reasons, the particular nursing home that was in the move did exist. The true name of the nursing home was Heritage House and Wade Blank (fictitious "Black")was employed there in 1971. He did take the youth of that home to a Greatful Dead concert and yes, he was eventually fired for trying to get them out of Heritage House. I am sorry to say that I cannot comment on Michael Mills as I only know him based on the movie and what little I have read. I can however, tell you about Wade Blank, as he was my uncle.
Many years later, Heritage House was sued for millions of dollars. It actually went all the way to the US Supreme Court.
