Why would he have to bring all the carpet through the window??

Dinky's dad said he had to bring all the black carpet for her room, through the window.
Why? Why didn't he just climb through the window, unlock the door, and bring the carpet in that way?

I suppose it was to show how much Dad loved Dinky, but come on! We could see how much he cared.

Been a while since I saw it, but I thought he did that so the wife wouldn't see ...

Maybe he thought that the act of unlocking the door would be like a violation of Dinky's trust and since she was a tough nut to crack, he didn't want to give her any more of a reason to pull away from him.
