Extended version

I once heard that there was a six-hour extended version of Vincent and Theo that had been shown on European television. But I've never heard any more about it. Does this ring a bell?

reply

I've heard that too, I think it was in a Washington Post review, or maybe Rolling Stone. Anyway, I looked around ebay and didn't find anything, and frankly I don't think you can get your hands on it unless you nick it from the vaults of the Euro TV station. Would you happen to know if there are any region 1 DVDs released?

reply

I don't think so. No sign of a Vincent and Theo DVD that I can see. It would be great if they'd put one out. I've never seen it in letterbox and a director's commentary would be great, too. There's so much fuss about Minelli's Lust for Life, but I think that Vincent and Theo is far superior. Unfortunately it's often the best films that are never released on DVD.

reply

Vincent and Theo is available as a region 2 DVD.

It was announced today that it's being released in August of this year....for those interested. I'm still waiting on Lust for Life, but if this is good, I'll get this to tie me over.

Yup-the DVD will come out August 23rd. It's running time sounds to be about the same as listed here on IMDB.

And as for that extended version, I never heard of it. It sounds kind of extreme that many hours for a movie that came out at 2 hours and 20 minutes long to go to 6 hours or so. I am curious what kind of footage would be in there.

And yes I would also like to see a DVD of Lust for Life. Tha would be cool.

I pre-ordered this DVD from amazon.com, I have been waiting for a long time to get my hands on this! It was only $12. Anyways, the title menu has subtitles and even a behind-the-scenes clip with Altman talking about his process of making the film (so artist). This DVD is a must for any artist and fan of quality films!

Hi, i just saw from dvdtalk, and maybe it can help:

".....A trailer is included (it has slightly richer colors than the transfer itself) along with a lengthy interview documentary with Altman and his son, production designer Stephen Altman. The talk rambles quite a bit but we pick up interesting details, such as the fact that Altman fils utilized the services of a number of French art students to create the many fake Van Gogh works in progress and seen hanging in Theo's private gallery. Altman also explains that the project started as a miniseries with the BBC, but when it was decided to go for a film release, he had to set aside two hours of 'backstory' material, which never saw the light of day. Tim Roth and Paul Rhys appear briefly in a couple of interview clips from the set of the film.

Thanks for the information! What a wasted opportunity, though. They release the DVD, but don't include this "lost" footage. It would have meant very little extra effort and would have made the DVD vastly more appealing. Disappointing.

There is a 204 minute, 2 disc DVD available in Spain of Vincent & Theo. I'm excited to see this, I might just order it.

Thanks for the information! I just wish that they'd put out a Region 1 version.

There are four versions. A bootleg "5 hour series" version, a 138 minute version, a 200 minute version and the original TV mini-series version. The 138 minute version was released in cinemas, the 200 minute version is Altman's prefered cut, the 5 hour version you can only find pirated.
