...did Harvey Keitel seem almost narcoleptic in this movie? Or was it his character? It seemed like the murderous "evil" in the character came out of nowhere.

he was sadistic! I had the feeling he just liked torturing the cat and had no problem hacking people up! and yes out of nowhere!

I felt he was evil all along. He seemed to take great pleasure in photographing dead bodies at crime scenes in the most disgusting, exploitative way possible. Because of this, it came as no surprise to me that he would decide to partake in murder of humans and animals.
