Going to Bixby. What makes them think Bixby would be safe?

So Burt Earl whoever in the movie mentioned going to Bixby.

What makes them think that Bixby would be any safer from the Graboids?

reply

It was either in the mountains, or on the other side of the mountains so the Graboids couldn't get there.

reply

Well im pretty sure the graboids would travel through or under some parts in the mountain to get to Bixby. Didnt look like the whole "mountain" was made from hard

reply

Actually, the mountains in the basin and range country are made of bedrock that's been uplifted by fault blocking, so no, a graboid wouldn't be able to tunnel through a typical mountain range. Of course they'd generally be able to tunnel *around* most of the mountain ranges in that area, if you look at a relief map of the western US you see that most of the mountain ranges in that area aren't very long.

But for script purposes, they've said that Perfection, Utah, is bordered by a mountain range on one side and a cliff on the other, which isn't geologically likely. It also raises the question of what the hell the graboids are doing in a region they couldn't get *to*.

reply

They answered that question when they introduced the "assblasters". They fly off and wherever they land is where they drop the eggs.

reply

Was that in one of the sequels?

reply

Yes. Sorry I don't remember which particular one at this time.

reply

Thank you, I would hate to think I missed a plothole fix.

The writers of the first film didn't, though!

Assblasting sequels aside, I think that was the implication; they were always in that region, before the fossil record even. They never moved there, just never left.

reply

It just seems like too small and barren an area to support a long-term population of large predators. Even mountain lions need to range over huge swaths of desert to find enough to eat, and mountain lions are a fraction of the size of the graboids.

reply

That's a good point. What exactly is their "normal" diet? And how frequently do they eat?

reply

Mountain lions live on deer, jackrabbits, rodents, lizards, whatever, and Perfection looks too barren to support large grass-eaters year-round. So maybe the graboids can live on burrowing rodents, maybe they have a slow reptilian metabolism that can live for a year on a single feral pig, who the hell knows and they're imaginary anyway. But the fact that there are only four of the things in a solidly bordered area does make me think that the characters were wrong; the population is too small to be sustainable, and these were probably some unfortunate members of their species who got ass-blasted into an area where they couldn't sustain the species over the long term.

Honestly, I'd enjoy movies more if I could turn off the part of my brain that thinks about these things rationally, but there it goes...

To be fair, Rhonda didn't even believe her own hypothesis so yeah, it did leave the mythos open for ass-blasting plot devices lol.

Perfection, NEVADA.

reply

I can’t remember this one, didn’t someone get bit in the dick?
I will have to re watch it.

reply

maybe if you watched the movie, or knew anything about basic geology, they explain that the mountains are made of solid granite and teh graboids are trapped in the percetion valley

reply

I think it was less of trying to be safe from the Graboids and more of trying to find other people for help. Their current predicament was that they were trapped with no cars or communication. And the Graboids were slowly destroying their town's buildings that they were hiding on. On top of that they only had a limited amount of food and water.

Bixby would at least have supplies, communication, and vehicles. Also, with man eating worms entering a large town I would assume the authorities and national guard would get dispatched and kill them fairly quickly.

reply

They figured if it got mad enough, it would hulk out and crush those pesky worm thingies.

reply

LOL. Good one.

reply

thank you kind sir. lol, I don't even remember making that post.
