This I never got. How did he get the map? Where were the others when he took it? Also, why did he take the map in the first place if the only thing he was going to do with it is hide in the middle of nowhere and spend his final days waiting for death on the hill with his telescope. What kind of a life is that?
Not to mention that the people he was waiting for could have come during the night when he wasn't looking...
Good questions. He apparently got hold of the map after Captain Flint died and ran off with it so he wouldn't have to share the treasure with the other pirates. But fear and too much drink drove him to just hide out with it--he never found the courage to head to the island on his own. I think he took it out of greed without thinking through the consequences.

The book says that Flint gave it to him as he lay dying in Savannah.Whether you think that gives him a legitimate right to it I don't know.Were Flints men paid before they hid the treasure ? Probably not although Bones had an account book with his fair share all marked out so they probably all had some unpaid entitlement.
