Why Would The Rekall Fantasy Include a Bad Wife

Seems like a poor addition to an implanted memory. For your real wife to made a bad guy in the fantasy.

Now, most of will say... 'but the implant has gone wrong and that's why she's a bad guy' but if that's true then Rekall would be aware of it earlier.

You want to live an action movie then there has to be action and twists. Her betrayal was instrumental to the plot. Rekall surely has competitors.

Perhaps one's conscious can sway events here and there in the sequence. Fill in gaps, etc.

Why Would The Rekall Fantasy Include a Bad Wife

It would just reinforce the whole "secret agent" aspect of the fantasy.

Now, what doesn't make sense is why Rekall would include a previous memory implant gone wrong and the whole idea of Rekall being the screw up, or having implanted a memory of a golf ball being pulled out of his nose, or the memory of having to kill the woman he "loved".

I agree with most of that but to be fair it was really more of a ping pong ball that he pulled out of his nose.

But it's a permanent memory. That was the point of Rekall. You don't experience actually beign a spy, you only have memories of it.

Under those circumstances, giving you the permanent memory that your loving wife is a bad person is bizarre.

You're assuming that everything that happened to Quiad after going to ReKall was not real. The movie intentionally never answered the question: Was the whole Hauser on Mars working for Cohaagen story true, or was this part of Quaid's implanted memories?

👍 The writer who added the tech guys line "This is a new one, blue skies on Mars', deserves an award.

That one sentence makes the whole movie a melon twister.

If it's a memory implant, why make the wife a baddie? Giving someone the false memory that their wife is a bitch is highly unlikely. It either suggests what's happening is real or the movie fudges why Rekall didn't see things had gone wrong much sooner.

It makes sense to me. You are a secret agent, you alone are uncovering a world shattering story.Everything and EVERYBODY you trust is not who they seem, including your loving wife. You have few friends, you have to use instincts and poker skills to survive and find out the true story.

Also he was a man who came to Rekall WITHOUT his wife, a man who comes in alone and chooses this option most likely wants to get away from the wife and kids.(and maybe subconsciously shoot them)

This isn't a Matrix style holiday though.

It's merely a memory implant. You spend the rest of your life with the memory. That's gonna fuck up a whole lot of marriages.

I see the addition of Lori as a “bad guy” as hot! I mean come on, guys who would you rather be married to: Sweet non-threatening Lori, cold psychopathic bitch Lori or YES? With Rekall you get the best of both worlds: a sweetie and a bitch.....which is probably what it must be like to be married to Sharon Stone IRL.

The question that we can't answer is that if Quaid wakes up in Rekall, how is it done? You have to assume that there are programs to ease him back to reality. I assume that there is some sort of decompression that occurs to bring him back safely. It is not shown in the movie, the ending intentionally left ambiguous.

Let's go with the notion that Rekall is a professional company, to have a implant program that kills you wife is,as you pointed out, potentially traumatic and very problematic.

Rekall would probably have a 'counter implant' program to mitigate the long term effects and trust issues once the scenerio is completed.

If the company didn't have this in place, lawyers would have a field day and the company would be toast.
