Was it a letdown that the remake didn't take place on Mars?

Was neither mentioned(like the original story) or took place there(like 1990).

reply

The remake was a letdown period.

reply

Mostly because there usually isn't a good reason to remake.

reply

haven't seen it

DECENT SCI FI ACTION FLICK....TERRIBLE REMAKE OF THE ARNOLD CLASSIC...IF YOU CAN DISASSOCIATE THE REMAKE FROM THE ORIGINAL ITS A FUN WATCH.BRYAN CRANSTON CHEWING SCENERY,COLIN FARRELL KICKING ASS,KATE BECKINSALE DOING WHAT KATE BECKINSALE DOES,WHICH IS REAL NICE.

reply

A significant problem with this film is I thought Kate Beckinsale (or her stunt double - I believe it was Alicia Vela-Bailey) could kick Colin Farrell's (and/or his stunt double) arse. Perhaps it was fighting all the vampires and werewolves but she looked very effective in the roughie-toughie stuff.

FAIR POINT.

reply

Funny I just wanted to point out that this is where the remake immediately lost me.
It was so absurdly over the top I stopped watching.

Sick and tired of this feminist propaganda nonsense these days.

The 2012 version might have been okay as its own film. As a remake of 1990 Total Recall, it’s absolutely a trainwreck and a complete joke. Not setting the film on mars and instead crafting some giant elevator shaft that goes through the earth’s core is mindblowingly stupid and probably should’ve been the primary focus of the film.

reply

Perhaps a movie where someone else has been Total Recalled would've been better.

The changes 1990 made to the original short story really can't be improve upon.

The film taking place on Mars think added a bit more scope.

reply

its like remaking back to the future and having no time travel.

reply

The remake was just garbage with or without Mars.

reply

One of those remakes that infuriates people by it's existence.

reply

TR wasn't even one of my favorite Arnold movies but even I thought the remake was bullshit.

reply

yeah, I remember watching this and all the while thinking it was about Mars, and remembering that, what the hell, feeling when the first cues that it was not came onscreen.

reply

Just a generic dystopian setting.

reply

i liked the film

and it wasnt really generic setting, it was pretty obviously "future China" although they changed the onscreen maps in post, to pretend it was actually set in "future Australia"

reply

I never hated the remake but it was inferior to the original

reply

It's becoming one of those remakes that everyone has forgotten about.

I don't know if it's a remake like Nightmare On Elm Street or Psycho where everyone is like "no no no you balls it up".

reply

It was one thing among many that made this remake inferior. The idea of going to Mars seems more fantastical and intriguing to me than going down to the Earth's core, especially in the way that the original and this remake presented those things. Throw in the mutants and their psychic powers (I can't even remember if the remake dealt with this it was that forgettable), and the idea that aliens had been on Mars and built the oxygen tanks, and it adds extra intrigue and mystery, something the remake lacked. Not to mention Mars ties in well with the idea of the central character wanting to break away from his daily life and be somewhere else entirely, then it's another reason that sticking with Earth makes it more underwhelming.

The remake by comparison was just bland in every department and felt soulless.

reply

And being there's only Great Britain and Australia in the remake kinda limits where you wanna go with a fake memory vacation. Think not going to Mars killed the suspension of disbelief, in a futuristic film like this you want to be given the opportunity to visit other worlds. It was just a stock dystopian/post apocalyptic Earth setting we've seen countless times.

It's one of those remakes of a film that can't really be improved upon.

reply

To those who say "Oh the original story didn't take place on Mars so the 2012 remake is following that" well some quite context the reason why the movie took place on Mars because the original short story had very little story for the film they were making, it was like eighteen pages long.
