Is this movie the best adaptation ever ?

From any medium ?

I enjoyed the cartoon as a child, however this movie is incredibly awesome.

It's certainly the best TMNT adaptation. Rewatched it recently and I think the costumes hold up amazingly well. Bonus points awarded for young Sam Rockwell too!

It's a shame about the sequels but at least this one is good. And I'm glad Golden Harverst were involved too as Hollywood martial arts fight choreography wasn't at the level it's at these days when this movie was filmed. The action scenes are very watchable.

Yes. Not sure why they can't come close ever since.

Abso-fucking-lutely.

reply

Yeah.... definitely.

The first Blade is pretty cool, too, and had its own visual look and feel separate from a lot of movies of the time.

But Blade sometimes felt disjointed, whereas Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles never really had downtime, and even when they did it was to help explore and grow the characters in surprisingly touching ways.

It had the right amount of comedy, some impressive and well-choreographed fight scenes, and a final boss fight that's probably one of the best in movie history where the good guys literally cannot defeat the main bad guy and he doesn't even have special powers. Very unique and impressive storytelling that I haven't seen in other films within the genre.

It had the right mix of elements, as cyguration noted above. Especially the humor. Had this been done as a totally serious film it would have flopped.

This is one of my favorite movies from the 90s.

I agree this movie was great but best adaptation ever? Even the biggest turtles fan has admit Godfather is a better adaptation than this. Lord of the Rings Trilogy??

This was great but not even same galaxy as those classics. Red Letter Media recently did a special review on TMNT The Movie with Mike and Rich Evans talking about how great it is and how bad TMNT 2 was.

I think he meant best adaptation ever of all the TMNT adaptations out there. That's the way I understood it at least...

correct - you can ignore the AI trolls, they don't always get things

reply

I love that film.

reply

yes it is very underrate! very good scripts and good actor in that film. 80s classics!

If you're not being literal, then yes, awesomest adaptation ever! The cartoon was great too, and this kinda captured what made the cartoon good without trying to go the dark and moody, serious route - like, it wasn't trying to set itself apart and be something different, it set about capturing the essence of the cartoons and did so splendidly. It's kinda goofy and camp and it knows and is comfortable with what it is: a movie about anthropomorphized turtles who fight crime and live in the sewers of a city - and that's why I love watching it.
