I always assumed that the gargoyle changed into human form in order to keep tabs on James Remar, to ensure that he would never break the promise that he made.

The gargoyle turned human because it wanted to feel love. You can see how sad the gargoyle is when he tells her the truth finally. The gargoyle truly did love him.

The only thing I don't like is how, when the gargoyle is about to kill him, he says "But I loved you!" or something like that. In the past tense. Wouldn't it have been better to have said it in present tense? Does his love for this woman suddenly die just because she has turned into a monster?

This was the best story of the three and was very sad...

Just saw the movie and of course the gargoyle segment was the best, but i have so many questions

1. What was the reason for the gargoyle awakening?
2. Was that the first time the gargoyle has ever awakened?
3. When the gargoyle awakened, did she have a need to kill, explore, etc.
4. Why did the gargoyle show herself to Jer and Preston in the alley? Is it because she wanted to kill them and knew they couldn't escape?
5. If 4 is true, did the gargoyle kill Jer out of bloodlust or was it a reaction from the gun shot?
6. When she is telling Preston to keep the whole thing a secret or she would kill him, why didn't she just kill him in the first place? Im pretty sure she didn't start loving him at this point.
7. Why and how exactly did Carola become a human?
8. When she was a human and saw Preston, why did she act all scared like she never met him? Was she acting possibly because she wanted to see if he would keep his promise?
9. If she really is still a true gargoyle even in human form, why and how did she fall in love with Preston?
10. How did she know how humans had sex and have children? Is it because once in human form she knew human traits automatically?
11. When Preston was telling her the truth, why didn't she act so surprised at first and waited until after he was done telling? Was it because she hoped he would stop talking about it?
12. Im pretty sure the children also turned into gargoyles because they were also true gargoyles just in human form do to their mother being in that form too, but if they didn't really know about them being true gargoyles, why did they act like they didn't care?
13.For the love of god.........why did Carola and the children turn to stone......AT NIGHT!?
14. How long will they be in stone? Will they now awake every night, every other night, years, etc.?

The story leaves most of those things a mystery. Gargolyes are the most lonely things in the world, they also sit perched high above and "see" everything. Her story reflects his as he was a lonely guy. She came to life b/c he was abandon by his agent; completely alone, like her. She killed the bartender simply to make a point. The story largely concerns "people looking the other way," in the city (concerning crime), in business (his agent, the bartender), socially (drunks and women with illegitimate children). Notice she never told him about her past and who the real father was, nor did he ask. It's about trust and secrets, for both love and selfish need, and personal responsibilty (the main theme which ties all the stories together). When he broke the vow she had to turn to stone and be lonely again. This is what the gargoyle represents in the story.

No need trying to make real world sense out of metaphors. That's not what these tales are for anyway.

Yes, this was easily the best tale in this overall disappointing big screen version of the superior tv series of the same name. "Cat From Hell" was pretty good too.

I don't have all the answers, but I believe Carola had been watching Preston from above through his skylight for some time, as indicated by the shots at the start of the story. I also believe she wanted to feel love.

As for the killing and the vow, I always took it that they were both part of some sort of ritual that allowed Carola to transform herself into a human, and once Preston broke his vow, he broke the power of the ritual, and thus broke Carola's human form.

As for her turning to stone with the children, I thought of it more of her going to sleep, or becoming dormant. I believe she was alive at the start of the story, watching Preston, and I believe she continued to be alive after his death. As to her and her children's activities after that - it will have to remain a mystery I guess.

I loved this one, by the way!

1. What was the reason for the gargoyle awakening?

James Remar spilled the beans!

2. Was that the first time the gargoyle has ever awakened?

In that lifetime, yes.

3. When the gargoyle awakened, did she have a need to kill, explore, etc.

Yes, she had to kill the bean spiller! Per the curse.

4. Why did the gargoyle show herself to Jer and Preston in the alley? Is it because she wanted to kill them and knew they couldn't escape?

Because to turn human she had to exact a promise.

5. If 4 is true, did the gargoyle kill Jer out of bloodlust or was it a reaction from the gun shot?

No, it was part of her curse. Kill someone, and then have someone else sworn to a promise.

6. When she is telling Preston to keep the whole thing a secret or she would kill him, why didn't she just kill him in the first place? Im pretty sure she didn't start loving him at this point.

Because this is how she turns human, and that is what she wants so very much.

7. Why and how exactly did Carola become a human?

Shortly after getting the promise she undergoes a really awesome metamorphosis.
They were going to film it but Rae Dawn Chong was being a real bitch about cooperating (apparently it involved many hours of makeup)and it was real expensive so the director said forget it.

8. When she was a human and saw Preston, why did she act all scared like she never met him? Was she acting possibly because she wanted to see if he would keep his promise?

It was part of her plan to seduce him.

9. If she really is still a true gargoyle even in human form, why and how did she fall in love with Preston?

Because this is her chance to become human, per the curse. Also, James Remar
is quite a hunk. And she had been watching him for sometime. Check out the Warriors if you don't believe me.

10. How did she know how humans had sex and have children? Is it because once in human form she knew human traits automatically?

YES!

11. When Preston was telling her the truth, why didn't she act so surprised at first and waited until after he was done telling? Was it because she hoped he would stop talking about it?

YES!

12. Im pretty sure the children also turned into gargoyles because they were also true gargoyles just in human form do to their mother being in that form too, but if they didn't really know about them being true gargoyles, why did they act like they didn't care?

Because it is part of the curse.

13.For the love of god.........why did Carola and the children turn to stone......AT NIGHT!?

Because it too is part of the curse.

14. How long will they be in stone? Will they now awake every night, every other night, years, etc.?

Seven years!

Now, if you want a better appreciation for this, see the film KWAIDAN
and pay attention to the story WOMAN IN THE SNOW (which was the original inspiration).

[2. Was that the first time the gargoyle has ever awakened?
In that lifetime, yes.]

Incorrect, there was a moment where Carola explained that there was an incident in Indiana where something happened to her and she had to move, she never gave the details. Maybe something simular happened there, but it's speculation on a story that had many vague notions, like how she had a friend who knew a friend who knew the owner of the gallery. Gargoyle union perhaps?

I assumed the gargoyle had been watching the struggling artist and fallen in love with him, and saw an opportunity to be with him, on the condition he never said anything about that night. My favorite line is the woman's: "you promised you'd never tell!" -- she delivers it really well.

Ray, if someone asks you if you're a god, you say YES!!!

reply

Yeah, really; every time I hear that line I get goosebumps.

It's odd that they changed the ending from the original version (a much better ending in my opinion) and the type of creature in the story of course.

Just finished watching this. My take on it was that Carola/Gargoyle becomes human to live a normal life with someone. She has to reveal herself to them as the gargoyle for them to make a vow in order for her to become a human. Once she gets with the man, I think she hopes they'll never tell so she won't have to return to being a gargoyle. Telling the secret breaks the vow so breaks her human form. When she was turning back into the gargoyle, she said she couldn't stop it, so turning isn't a choice. And it sounds like she did this before, I swear she said she had a boyfriend in California that didn't work out. Since she has gargoyle kids now,

I wonder if she will ever try it again with the kids, or since she has them now she isn't lonely so won't try to be human again? And another thing, how is it she knew the friend of the art gallery guy? If she has been a gargoyle, how did she have the contact? Unless they had been gargoyles too...

reply

My take on it was that the Gargoyle wanted to give back to him for scarring him so she gave him a good life until he broke the promise since she saw the sketch. why wouldnt she confront him about it?

I dont understand what your trying to say? the Gargoyle creature said tell no one and make that promise say yes I am guessing Rae was like a fairy/Gargoyle person to give James Remar character in line and too give him a good exciting life. you keep your mouth shut everything will be 100 percent good but since he told her she had to go back to her true form and kill her husband.

reply

[deleted]

Yeah it does.

When did he say too much? Except when it ended and he told his wife/Gargoyle.

Oh my views on the matter was after she scratched him then that was the contract but before that he could. But who knows.

reply

Just wanted to point out, she was not a Gargoyle. She was a Grotesque.
People often get the two mixed up.

What is the difference?
A Grotesque is a stone monster like figure that sits atop a building. (what she was)
A Gargoyle is the same thing, except it's used for drainage of rain water (mainly) and had a hole in it's mouth. Think of the words "gurgle" and "gargle", it's means "of the throat/gullet".

What McClane was saying is correct. What you think of as gargoyles without water drains, are actually grotesques, and only called gargoyles by a very common mistake.

Well, I'm joining this conversation pretty late(just finished watching it for the first time right now).

I just wanted to chime in, because I can obviously understand what you're saying. I think the reason why this doesn't make the rules inconsistent or paradoxical is because when he told her at the end, he did it thinking she was a normal person, therefore breaking the promise. If he had said it back to the gargoyle in the beginning, it wouldn't matter because the promise is to not tell anyone, obviously excluding himself and the gargoyle, who clearly both already know.

It also explains why she didn't stop him when she realized he was about to tell her. If she could just come out and say, "Wait! Don't say it! I wanna stay human and continue our lives together! Don't force me to transform back into a gargoyle and kill you!", then it would kind of negate the need for a promise. He's supposed to just hold to the promise, in exchange for his life. Once he told, he had to die, and she couldn't stay human anymore, losing her chance at being a family and having a happy life as a human.

One thing that does seem to make it inconsistent however, is that at the art gallery, when the drunk guy from the bar shows up, she seems to try to interfere with their conversation, preventing him from possibly breaking his promise. It seems that if she's allowed to do that, she could just come out and say, "You know that promise you made the day we met? Well, you better keep it." She wouldn't have to say more than that to convince him to keep it. Either way, fairy tale kinda stories always have bargains and loopholes and rules that don't make sense. The point is usually the moral or the obstacles the characters overcome, and not necessarily the consistency of the magical rules involving gargoyles and love.

reply

maybe it's a little like a religion; w/ Rae's character being orthodox. instead of being the victim of some magical penalty maybe she was always in control of her response (and the transformation of her children) to him breaking his promise. it would explain her intervention at the art gallery. things seemed to be going in her favor. she wanted to protect that. but his admission at the end was an unforced error. there was trust between them, at that point. i sensed annoyance when he began telling her about his secret. she asked, "well why are you telling me, now." it seemed like there was a pause after that. then she flew into a rage and began the change.

reply

That's right and i assume she flew from other places before and mated with other men in human form then when they broke their vows she changed back and sliced them into pieces.

Anyone thinks there are other gargoyles in human form among society?

Yes, some work as teachers at Clacton Coastal Academy. One was a headteacher who 'left' and went to Hillingdon. No wait, I think those people were demons.
