'The Westies' book

I heard this movie is loosely based off the book "The Westies". That true? Love the book but I don't see any of the people in this movie.

*spoilers*

To answer my own question it is very loosely based. Just watched the film. You can tell it was made from the book but they changed so much. The movie would've been way better if they stuck to the Westies story more closely. What's funny is Sean Penn actually looked like Mickey the main guy, but in the book he is a big-time thug and ends up turning rat at the end. In the movie he's undercover the whole time. Also Ed Harris' character is supposed to pretty much never leave bodies to be found. He was obsessed with cutting people up. But in the movie he leaves Stevie to be found by everyone for some reason.

I thought the movie was ok but if you guys liked it SERIOUSLY read "The Westies" book. Way more accurate

Which Westies book are you referring to? The only one I am aware of with that title is the one by TJ English. It is an excellent read, but was released a year after this movie. It is clear that the story of SOG was inspired by earlier news reports of the Westies.

Although SOG was a fine movie, I would like to see a movie that is a strict retelling of the actual story of the Westies. A youngster who takes revenge on the mobster who hurt his father, forming a gang of homicidal thugs and eventually becoming a relentless social climber....his side kick, a maniacal, deeply traumatized Viet Nam war vet who goes in and out of madness before developing a conscience and becoming a cooperating witness...Hollywood does not create stories that cool.

Yeah that was the book I was referring to. Didn't know it came out after the movie. I would love it if they made what you're talking about though. At least Black Mass did good so you never know.
