Why didn't this movie get more attention?

This movie deserved more attention than it got. Ed Harris, Gary Oldman, Sean Penn and Robin were wonderful in this. I don't get it.

I think because Goodfellas came out at the same time.

Love this film, one of my favorite of all time, if not my favorite.

reply

Yes. It really should have gotten better press, but there were about 10 million "mob movies" that were released that same year. Particularly Goodfellas, Miller's Crossing and The Godfather Part III. Personaly I like State of Grace better than all of those slightly over hyped movies.

reply

Agreed -- I liked State of Grace over Godfather Pt. III, and Miller's Crossing, although I loved Goodfellas.

It's a shame this film wasn't more successful -- anyone know how much it made at the box office?

reply

Who knows ? I've often wondered that. This is a class movie.
It looks good , it sounds good , its got great acting ( Sean Penn
& Gary Oldman ? It just doesn't get any better. ) .....and it has
one of the best ever screen shoot-outs at the end.

I think this one of the top ten most underrated movies. It certainly was better than Godfather Part III and Miller's crossing but it is very hard to top Goodfellas.

reply

Yeah I love this movie too. It's in my top 50 for sure. But I find GoodFellas and Millers Crossing both better movies. Goodfellas is even my all time favorite.

reply

definitely deserved better than it got...
maybe it was just too much outside the realm of a 'typical' mob movie and not what people expected of gangsters for it to be appreciated. these were not suit wearing wine sipping mafia types, these guys were the maddogs that the mob turned loose on other gangsters (in real life) when they needed something brutal and messy done.
i mean, how could you like any of these guys? and thats what makes the movie really good. that and the fight scenes / shootouts which were top notch!

reply

If we're talking top shoot outs in a film , what about Chow Yun Fat in Hard Boiled? State of Grace Must have one of my favourite soundtracks/opening credit scenes since Blade Runner

This movie is a relataively unknown gem but it doesn't touch Goodfellas or Miller's Crossing. Haven't seen Godfather III.

reply

Goodfellas was released around the same time this film was, so everyone remembers that one and ignores this. It's a shame because this is such a great film. Personally I'll take Oldman over Liotta, Pesci and DeNiro any day.

Godfather 3 totally sucked, I hate that one.

Average amount of attention was paid to this average film. It wasn't that good.

reply

The movie deserved to be ridiculed for a horrible script.
Great acting, but that doesn't make up for the farce premisees of the story.

reply

Oh.

Yeah I agree with this. It's an OK movie, but it's very predictable and the script is like something from a TV movie. It's only greatness is in Oldman and Penn's performances.

reply

I never heard about it when it came out, I was 17 and did enjoy the Godfather Part III and Goodfellas but for some reason I never heard anything about this one. I finally got around to watching it today and I got to say I really liked it all except the ending. Could've been so much cooler.

reply

It seems to be pretty well liked by most who watch it.
