Stanley was kind of a jerk!

I do like this film, but Stanley was more than a little irritating.

He was sly when approaching Iris to begin with, not charming really or even suave.
He smirked through most of the film (we see his future "Angel Heart" smirk here)and made lecherous remarks (later on, Iris seemed to like this but still)
The way he commented so rudely on Iris's haircut really was rude!

And granted Iris making him find his way around town when he clearly wasn't ready was NOT fair, she was nothing but nice to him! Yet he was repeatedly rude to her when she was teaching him to read and for FREE no less!

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

I agree, they made him too much of a jerk. No woman would pursue a guy that hard when he was so rude. "Will i see you again?" "No!" It was too much. They should have toned down his rudeness, and shown more embarrassment instead, and also have his character show more appreciation for her. They just took the whole angry loner thing a little bit too far and it made his character really unsympathetic.

Jerks get the girls, nice guys finish last.

IMDB as of late, sold out and became like City Data and about.com, worthless bureaucrats.

That's an outdated generalization usually reserved for young people that date in a fickle manner. But if you look at "the girls" that "the jerks" get long-term...it's usually a perfectly miserable match. High school reunions are notorious for displaying those couples.

Nice guys rock!!

I can only agree with the haircut comment - at least he was being honest.

And regarding his rudeness to Iris when she was teaching him to read, I think he was just frustrated, and understandably so, believing it was futile.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!
