I've been watching this movie for years and always enjoy this scene. The guy was being a real prick. The way Deniro grabs his shoes and nonchalantly walks out is so hilarious. I just noticed that Stanley really became infuriated once the clerk asked him to sign the book. It makes sense that he just jumped over the counter to prevent any embarrassment being that he could not read nor write.
