Not that bad for mst3k

I first saw this on mst 3k and as a long time fan of mst3k (watched it when it first came on in the 80's) I have to say out of all the movies they've shown it's one of the only movies on the show that wasn't completely laughable. I actually got into the storyline which is rare for me when watching the show's normal duds. Not that this movie was ingenius either, it definately had it's flaws. Alot of the acting was atrocious, the writing pretentious and holes in the plot but still for a low budget movie there were some real streaks of creativity in the writing and storyline. I usually don't comment on indie films (unless they outright suck) because it's impossible to be fair when there are so many things the producers can't afford but this movie has gained world wide fame through mst so I don't mind giving my thoughts here. So overall, comparing it in a traditional way to higher budget movies, yeah, this movie was pretty bad but basing it for what it is (a low budget film) it's not too shabby. I wouldn't recommend going out and renting it but if it were on tv I'd watch it.

Soultaker(1990) was a bad movie, but not the worst film shown on MST3K(that honor goes to Monster A Go Go).

I really think that when it comes to MST3k movies it's better when the "bad" movies aren't godawful. I think that when they riff on movies that have no followable plot and are just repulsive it almost makes it less funny. Or maybe it's less watchable. At least for me, I find myself not paying attention cause there's nothing to follow.

However, with movies like this one, Final Sacrifice, and Devil Doll it's FAR more entertaining. At least SOME of the actors can sortof act, SOME of the plot made you wonder what would happen next and SOME of the scenes weren't terrible. It's much easier to sit back for 90 minutes watching one of those movies rather than...say...Racket Girls.

I agree with this. I have a hard time making my brain not pay attention to the movie itself even though I love the riffs, and for that reason Soultaker is one of my favorite episodes. I watch B-horror movies like this all the time.

On the other hand, Overdrawn At The Memory Bank is so bad it makes me frustrated. But at least it has line "I love you this much! I don't care for you!"

I suppose after sitting through movies like Manos, Red Zone Cuba, and Overdrawn at the Memory Bank anything would look good.

"While you were still learning how to spell your name, I was being trained to conquer galaxies!"

Some of the films featured on the show are actually quite good. I enjoyed BLOODLUST so much the first time I saw it that I rewatched it unedited.

But Rifftrax lately has proven that even good movies can be the butt of jokes, including some funny riffs on THE MATRIX, HIGHLANDER, and most recently on THOR.

Good for an MST3K movie, but that doesn't mean it's actually a good movie. It still sucks.
