why

would they make him spanking his brother

reply

Because in the period the movie is set, that was a common form of discipline for boys. It was 'expected'. Punishments such as 'time-out' were simply not thought of. It was almost considered proper that a young boy should at some stage of his life receive a good 'whupping' so that he would always know right from wrong. Whether it was correct by todays 'ultra-PC' standards is not an issue. It's just the way things were done in those times.

WHAT? Just exactly when do you think those times were? omg! 50 years ago?
No, they were like 1987/1988! Barely 20 years ago.

This story is about some boys from the area I grew up in. And yes our parents did spank us and there's nothing wrong with it! At least we are well behaved adults now who aren't freaking murderers or some other psycho like the kids are now who don't get spanked.

The Grandfather made Terry spank his brother because he was in charge of his brothers. Terry needed to be seen as the authority figure over the boys, even though their grandfather was there.

Agreed. Gramps was going way out to help those boys but said he'd had enough of spanking whith having raised his own trouble making son. In other words grandpa didn't want to do it either but believed it necessary.
