This is a continuity error caused by the deletion in the editing room of an entire subplot where Boulder is revealed to be Junior's father, and he turns out to be the main bad guy. He's out for vengeance on Soldier because only Soldier got to see the black chick naked, and Boulder/Bronsky can't live with the jealousy. So he sets up Soldier's whole family to be killed by Junior.

Incidentally, the bit at the end with Horschack was originally supposed to occur in the middle of the movie. In the longer version, Boulder/Bronsky ironically gets eaten by the bear (yes, in the original cut, the bear turns out to be real) after trying unsuccessfully to drown Soldier in the river.
