other movies like this?

I frikin' love this movie. Does anyone have any other suggestions for 80's or early 90's movies movies that fit into a similar mold as this movie. You know, the bad-yet really good movies.

I would like to nominate American Flyers as one.

Beer? Isn't that the amber-colored, carbonated liquid? I've heard good things about it. Norm

Yep. Check out "Best of the Best". Definitely in the same B+ category as Side Out. Eric Roberts and Chris Penn and Philip Rhee. James Earl Jones as the coach. It has it's fair share of cheese but it moves quickly and the Korean team is very convincing in being the evil favorites. It's just like Side Out in that - for some reason - it's just a fun film. I think the secret to the success for both films is that they manage to have lead characters that you care about and you desperately want them to win. Check it out if you haven't already.

They made 4 of these but the first one is really the only one that uses the "tournament" premise. The others are straight action flicks that are similar to Van Damme or Segal flicks.

My recommendation for you guy is to check out Wikipedia for USA UP ALL NIGHT! That show had tons of movies that you would like to watch dating back from 1986 until 1998. They showed a variety o cheesy movies from the 80's and 90's.

I figured that I would let you know about it because I am a fan of USA UP ALL NIGHT and use to watch it all of the time when it was on late on Friday and Saturday nights! I am sure you would love it as well because they showed Sideout which was great to watch!

I just thought I would let you know about it!

I think that Rad (1986) fits in to this catagory.

It is an awesome moviee about a 17 year old kid that loves bmx racing, and signs up to try to quality for this race called Hell Track (that all the top BMX riders will be racing for a brand new Corvette and $100,000 in cash). Side Out and Rad are 2 of my favorite movies.

I liked those two as well as Gleaming the cube.

Airborne. Greatest rollerblading movie of all time, featuring a young Jack Black.

Karate Kid part three was also pretty awesomely bad. Mr. Miyagi was completely phoning it in by then. And Daniel was sporting a nice gut at that point.

bfuente1 mentioned North Shore, and to me that's probably its closest companion piece. Tonally it's more of a drama, but it's otherwise very much in the mold of Side Out. The other would be, as mikeh362 said, Airborne, which is sort of a reverse Side Out, with the kid going from the beach to the Midwest. It's got a lighter tone.
