What Did She Really Achieve?

I enjoyed the film - it was well done and thought provoking.

The key point for me is the question 'What did she achieve?'

To judge people from different times is difficult and whilst to us now these things seem black and white, living in those times it may not have been so: decisions had to made; sides had to be taken; self preservation is surely high on anyone's list of options.

We need to ask what is the damage she does by re-opening these wounds and compare that with what she eventually achieves, if anything.

I don't know the answers, just asking the question.

The outcome may not have been pretty but I for one prefer to live in a world of ugly truths than in one of pretty lies. If it achieves one thing, it's the lesson that you don't get away with the ugly things you've done in the past. Some people are moral of their own accord, but some need that knowledge that what they do may have consequences and will come back to haunt them down the track.

In reality of course lots of people get away with it, but nevertheless, it's comforting to know that even after all these years, there's justice for people like Professor Jukenack in the film.

You sound like a smart person ... thus said I am surprised you need to ask this question. The point is that Sonja grew up in school system in the 70's and the Holocaust ... just 25 years prior ... was being glossed over and barely discussed.

The greatest lesson of the Holocaust is that it can never be forgotten ... or white washed ... so that it can never be repeated. Making this point is her achievement.
