The Best Film Ever?

Brilliant in every aspect, from score through to casting. Better than the book.

reply

I agree, very very good, a brilliant performance by an unbelievably stunning Pfeiffer, well done screenplay.
Most people find it slow and too wordy: well folks, it is not SUPPOSED to be an action flick!!!
A very intelligent movie.

reply

Uh definitely not the best movie ever. I think I would enjoy this movie more if it didnt confuse the bejesus out of me. Btw Connery is a drunk.

reply

Connery may be a drunk, but he's the best actor in the history of the world.

reply

Is that scotch?

reply

Connery? he's the best actor in the history of the world?????

you must be kidding me!

For someone who can not spell "intelligent" it is a pretty long post, but not convincing enough. Perhaps this movie is just not your cup of tea... Of course, Kill Bill is so much easier to comprehend, hence it must be better.

Once again a movie to split decisions. I can understand some may find it long in the tooth. There is much conversation, much blabla that will shorten out the short attention span of most people nowadays. Me personally, I loved it. It's on my all-time favourite list, along with the book. I know the book by heart, so it was easy for me to follow the often word-by-word transition to screen. This is one to watch over and over...

I'm glad to see there are other people who feel the same way.I wouldnt say it is the BEST movie ever, but it is among the best... IMHO.

Oh, and Kill Bill? Worst movies ever made...

reply

Kill Bill is one of the (top twenty?) most entertaining and coolest movies ever.
Do you only watch movies for story? That is sad

reply

When the word Coolest is used in a description of a film, count me out. Hate that word. There are some directors whose only goal is to be thought of as COOL.

The Russia House is a very great movie. It is not a obvious and ordinary Hollywood thriller movie. It is more adult and sophisticated. Sean Connery is excellent.

reply

No doubt about it, The Russia House is one of the best movies ever. I would put it up there with movies like North By Northwest or Chariots of Fire (my other two favorites). The key to this movie is enjoying the dialouge. For fans of movies who want to enjoy the dialouge, no movie could be more enjoyable. Tom Stoppard is definetly the best out there in terms of writing such dialouge and having seen many of his plays or adaptations of plays over the years, his ability to take an existing story and write dialouge which captivates the viewer is most excellent. To say that one does not enjoy this movie or that they were confused by it speaks to the level of their ability to comprehend the English language. Perhaps another Vin Diesel movie will hold their attention.

North By Northwest
The Russia House
Chariots of Fire
Gladiator (see, I do like action movies, too)
Operation Peticoat (my favorite comedy)

reply

Yes, a beautifully filmed, complex, intelligent, character-driven story with fine and entertaining performances by everyone involved and especially Sean Connery in what I think is his most fully realized role ever. Gorgeous locations, witty dialogue, beautiful soundtrack.

One of my all-time favorites.

reply

I agree with you about the dialogue being good, but I'd like to point out that most of it is either verbatim from the LeCarre novel, or in the LeCarre style. It is my musing that there is very little Stoppard in this story and he made mostly room for LeCarre's classic banters.

reply

I think that Stoppard managed to save the LeCarre novel, but still insert a few personal references.

Re: the review on the main movie page. I think that it is true that apart from recent history buffs (I am very interested by 1950-90) this movie does become quickly dated as many people really do not know that much about the fall of the Soviet Union, and the seeming persistence of it as an institution in the late 80's.

reply

Having visited the old Soviet Union in '92 for one month and again in '93 for three weeks, what struck me was how this wonderful movie captured the essence of what some people find so appealing about visiting Russia.

reply

To PhrozenPheonix, Why shouldn't we start with oh its an intelligent thriller...it was. It has a complex plot that is, I agree, hard to follow at first. But with multiple watchings, it comes clearer what is going on. If someone likes a 007 type action flick, this isn't it. But neverless, the acting is superb, and the story is poignant and touching. How could someone not like Sean and Michelle together?

my god its full of stars

reply

Best movie ever? No way!, it's a correct film with correct performances, correct directing, correct adaptation to the original book, correct soundtrack and so on. It's a good movie and that's all. Of course, it outstands if we compare the "Russia House" with the massive crap that we may see now in theatres but, anyway, if you're an old-fashioned viewer - I mean, able to enjoy dialogs that may take more than two sentences - you may find it pretty interesting. By the way, I prefer the book, It's just... let's say Better. Greetings!.

reply

The first time I saw this movie I wasn't able to follow it but I think I have a rough idea of the plot. Even though I don't understand it very well I still love this film.

I don't know if I would call it "the best" film ever, as that's open to such debate. I'm happy to call it my favorite movie. I pretty much agree with what everyone else has said so far, with the exception of the guy who didn't understand it. It's an intelligent movie, and should not be criticized by those who can't comprehend it. That's not the movie's fault.

I didn't understand the movie, but it wasn't a criticism. Just a fact that I didn't understand it. I know it's not the fault of the movie, but the fault of my limited understanding. And obviously you didn't have the reading comprehension to understand my point.

reply

Sorry for the confusion, I was referring to a poster further above. I read and comprehended your post just fine.

Oh it was just a misunderstanding then. Also I'm sorry if I came off as being rude. No hard feelings then.
