This Installment is ALWAYS Skipped Over Whenever The Rocky Series Airs on Australian TV.

...Well maybe skip is not the right word because the oringinal Rocky series of films always end with Rocky IV - after each preceding film has been aired weekly on a Sunday afternoon. Has anyone else from Australia noticed this? As a result, I've never actually bothered to see Rocky V 🤣

The only reason I can think of for its unairing following the others is because it's the only film in the oringinal series to be classifed M for Mature in Australia (or at least it once was. I'm not sure if it still is). Even so, it couldn't be that violent not to show uncut or even with edits. It's still only rated PG in the US.

So I'm left to presume that Nine Network programming can't be bothered reviewing the mature rated Rocky V for broadcasting, which is still extremely odd since it's part of a blockbuster series of films that air every few months on a main channel.

Rocky V is the entry that most fans seem to hate and want to forget exists, so that may be why your network is skipping over it. They are probably thinking "no one wants to see that shit anyway" and literally pretending it doesn't exist.

I actually haven't seen the film in years, but I don't remember it actually being bad like many people say. It's definitely different from the rest of the franchise, though, and it's easily the most depressing of all the Rocky films. It's just not fun and triumphant in the way the others are.

reply

From what you described, that actually makes me want to see it now.

I should probably give it a rewatch. Go check it out and let us all know what you think.

👍

It took seven months, but I actually did follow through on my suggestion to myself to give it a rewatch.

It's not a bad film. There are a few script issues that I think could be improved--plot elements that could be strengthened with a few extra minutes of run time--and I'd still say it's the least entertaining of the original series (Rocky through Rocky V), but I still enjoyed it well enough and it deserves to be shown with the rest of the films when they air.

If you haven't done so, give it a look. I actually just made a big thread with some other thoughts on it.

It really isn't that bad, I'd watch Rocky V over Rocky IV any day.

reply

Wuuuut?

I agree that Rocky V "isn't that bad" but Rocky IV is the most entertaining film in the entire franchise!

reply

Rocky IV isn’t even so bad it’s good, it’s just bad. No character development , no story no heart. I hate Rocky IV so much

reply

Bro, I love it. Yes, it's little more than a 90-minute music video, but it's a hell of an entertaining film. I love the jingoistic pro-America theme and the energy is great.

It can also pump me the fuck up. I can be feeling listless and then watch Rocky IV and instantly feel like I need to pack up my workout gear and go hit the gym.

Just like three days ago I bought the Rocky collection on Blu-Ray and I was PISSED that there are no special features on the Rocky IV disc. That disc should be packed! Look, I need to know the inside story on Rocky and Rocky IV. The rest of the films are good, but for me, those are the two that I really feel motivated to rewatch.

reply

Yeah it pretty much was a 90 minute music video with boxing images thrown in. I have no idea what the point of it was and what’s funny is Stallone made another really cheesy, pro American movie that same year (Rambo First Blood Part II) and it was awesome. Rocky IV was a POS, I’m not going to act like rocky V was a masterpiece or a thing I but it was at least competent

reply

Despite what some people say, there IS a full three-act plot to Rocky IV. It's just punctuated by a higher than average number of (excellent) montages!

There's also one extremely well-done moment of high emotion when Apollo Creed delivers his speech about getting old. Carl Weathers NAILED that shit!

reply

Carl's speech was nothing special, and there was not a three act plot to the film, we got the setup (which was poorly done) but then it just skips the second act and goes straight to the finale, Rocky didn't have a mental or emotional journey to overcome, there was no character development whatsoever and even what we ended up with was pretty weak.

reply

I would define the acts thusly:

Act I - Motivation (Drago kills Apollo and pisses Rocky off)

Act II - Preparation (Rocky prepares himself to take on his nemesis)

Act III -Confrontation (Rocky fights Drago)

I will agree that Rocky experiences no real character growth, and he doesn't have the sterotypical moment of doubt where he's at the bottom and has to raise himself up.

But I don't give a fuck. I love it. It's a fun movie.

reply

I don't consider a training montage to be an Act, there was nothing internal going on with any of the characters. I will say this, the recap of the Drago fight in Rocky V was actually pretty good now that we had Bill Conti's score back.

Because the ausies are a bunch of dung detectives who are more interested in handing out vigorous handjobs in dark and poorly ventilated taverns than they are in coping with a movie with the unbridled chutzpah of rocky v.
