How long were the Balboas rich?

If Rocky became champion over Apollo in July 1977, and they became bankrupt after returning from Russia which was supposed to be Christmas 1985, my best guess is a little over eight years. But Rocky Jr's age right after the Drago fight makes everything screwy.

So they could either be eight years based on the Rocky IV timeline, or 12 years which was based on Rocky V timeline, assuming the movie first started in 1989 and ended 1990(reference to National Lampoons Christmas Vacation on television).

To this day, I wish Rocky would've regained his wealth from his champion days. Apollo Creed's family still had a mansion after he was killed 30 years ago. He was obviously a smart business man as well as a boxer.

well of course as is we all naturally like to think it follows the actual years the movie's follow so of course you would think what maybe 1979 after rocky II? to of course rocky V at the beginning in 1990 but as we know the movie "years" of each movie differs greatly to real life.

so maybe my guess would be 1977 which is when rocky II supposedly took place to early 1986 which is supposedly the year of rocky v just as when they come home from russia and it all happens.. I don't think they came home straight away.

personally I just like to go by the years the actual movies were made.. but in the rocky universe it isn't this way. so what maybe 9 years.. it was a while anyway you look at it.

yah i always wondered about their wealth issues.... but also enjoyed the back-to-the-hood kinda thing in part V

"If Rocky became champion over Apollo in July 1977"

It was November 1976, 10 months after the first fight.

In any case, if you ignore the timeline contradictions, then they were rich for about 5, maybe 6, years. In Rocky IV it's stated that Apollo hasn't been in the ring for about 5 years. Rocky goes to Russia a few/several months after that was stated, and he lost his money while in Russia.

He became champion Thanksgiving 1976 and lost his money around Christmas 1985

I think the Christmas Vacation is just a goof, I think the majority of the movie takes place in 1986

"Rocky V" starts in December of 1985 and slowly works its way up to December of 1990. By the end of the Tommy Gunn montage, magazine covers say "December 1990" on them. The movie was released in November of 1990, so those had to be specially made with the intent that at that point in the movie, it was the close of 1990.

"Christmas Vacation" isn't a goof. They put that there on purpose. In the director's cut, they were watching... "It's a Wonderful Life"? I think. It wasn't "Christmas Vacation," though.

If that were true then Rocky Junior would not have aged one bit from 1986 - 1990, and that means Rocky Junior would have spent 5 years trying a get his jacket back from those bullies. The movie began Christmas 1985, the majority of the film took place in 1986 and the final scene was at some point in mid 1987 (Rocky and Tommy's fight was probably early 1987). Christmas Vacation is a plot hole, you just have to accept it, but honestly in the previous movie there was a self aware robot that could interact with you and had consciousness so maybe Rocky time traveled to 1989, bootlegged Christmas Vacation and that is what his son was watching, it's no more preposterous than the Robot in Rocky IV

Re: Rocky Junior-- Rocky Krakoff (from "Rocky IV") was planned to play Rocky Junior at the beginning of the movie and as the film progressed, Sage Stallone would play him toward the end. However, when Krakoff proved unavailable, they just decided to have Sage play the character for the whole movie. If you pay attention, you'll notice Sage is far more fresh-faced and youthful looking at the beginning than he is at the end.

"and that means Rocky Junior would have spent 5 years trying a get his jacket back from those bullies"

No. The passage of time is during the Tommy fighting montage, which is after the point Junior gets his coat back.

"the final scene was at some point in mid 1987 (Rocky and Tommy's fight was probably early 1987)."

1.) The street fight takes place on Christmas, or somewhere thereabouts.

B.) The final scene of the movie is Rocky and Junior at the Philadelphia Art Museum, where there is a huge banner on the museum saying it's 1990. That's not some mistake; they meant that to be there, if they didn't put it on the museum themselves.

"you just have to accept it"

Uh, no, YOU have to accept it. You don't get to say "I don't like how poorly they conveyed this so it isn't so." The prop department had specially-made magazines made up that say "December, 1990" on them and the Art Museum says it's 1990. The end of the movie takes place in 1990, whether you like it or not.

Ok genius then explain how Rocky jr didn’t age in 5 years? Also in between losing the coat and getting it back there was a montage and according to you that had to have taken years but that would mean rocky jr spent years trying to get the coat back.
