Why do many people don't like this movie?

Well, I know the movie is very violent and has macabre scenes but I don't understand why the movie is so underrated and many people say is one of the worst movies ever made. I know it is not as good as the first movie but I think this is a good movie with good actors and a good sqcuence.

I think overall the movie was decent...

...but what kind of ruined it was having a kid at the helm of a drug ring. Who can really take that seriously? Where'd he come from? Who were his parents originally and how did he come into fruition? I think it was just a little bit unrealistic, and it deterred from the movie a whole lot, and personally... that was one of the main reasons I didn't like this movie, because it distracted an otherwise decent storyline with a good subplot and some nice dark humor that surpassed the first film.

...but that's just my opinion.

Thank you, you're right

Being Robocop 2, this movie gets compared to Robocop 1. The first was a very good movie, with a mean villain, clever plot and interesting characters.

Robocop 2 reuses a lot of the ideas from Robocop, but it fails to use them properly.

For example, in Robocop 1, Murphy walks into a trap, and is tortured by Clarence and his gang, remember "give the man a hand" scene? In Robocop 2 this scene is copied, Robocop walks into a trap and is caught with the magnet and then tortured with drils and saws. But with his robotic body, Murphy doesn't feel pain whatever they do to him so the scene just doesn't have the same impact.

Another example is with Robos directives. In the first movie, the directives, and especially the secret Directive 4 are an important part of the plot. Robocop 2 also uses the directives, but just for some silly jokes. And once Robo erases his directives they no longer have any significance.

I could give more examples, but I hope I already made my opinion clear. Robocop feels like a bad remake of Robocop 1.

Robocop doesnt feel pain? Lol, well thats a new one, at least when it comes to R1 and R2 (although obviously not feeling pain from R3 on)

Hey, I don't ever underestimate these kids - especially nowadays. Out here in the Real World, there have been many documented cases of teenagers being the leaders of violent street gangs and illegal drug distribution networks. You might find some stuff if you GOOGLE 'Kid Kingpins', and also, some of these vicious crime crews are being led by females, too. So really, it is not good to underestimate anyone.

Because there was NOTHING in the movie to attach to emotionally.

The first film was a really emotional movie.

The one scene Robocop 2 did well was him with his wife,

The movie should have been about that part of the story . Not just a throwaway
scene I just watched 1 and 2 back to back

1 is a great film, 2 is nothing but just action scenes with zero story imo.

I remember really liking 2 when I was a kid, but waching it again recently, really
disappointed.

The score, the bad guy, everything sucked but Weller

it was too dumb. a bit like t3.

Hated the kid villain. They wanted you to feel sympathy for him when he died but I had none for him.

Well, the plot has some holes in it which I suppose can bother some people.
Particularly the Murphy/wife thing never went anywhere; it was basically 'why are you bothering her?/stop bothering her/OK bye former wife'.
She was there one moment, and then never reappeared for the rest of the film.

That's one thing that could've made for some interesting twists, but it was never really used.

Your movie sucks.

reply

Yeah that was pointless. You hear someone talking about him driving by her house all the time but never see it. She comes in he says he don't know her and that was it. May as well not have been in the movie.

Atleast it is better than T3, T4 and all these Transformers crap you get today. Robocop 2 I give 4 out of 5 while the 1st I give 5 outta 5. Nuff Said.

reply

It's a great violent actioner, with bad humor... I love it.
Only plot hole that bothers me is the missing Cain henchmen (see my other post for details)

Apparently the movie was hacked to pieces by the studio before release, and one of the main things that got cut out was more plot regarding Murphy's ex-wife.

IMO:

Robocop 1: Awesome
Robocop 2: OK, but not as good as Part 1
Robocop 3: Terrible

You can probably say the exact same about 95% of the "trilogy" films.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

I think this movie is highly underrated. It was written by frank Miller of Sin City fame. The only part I think doesn't work that well is when Robo gets reprogrammed.

I agree with the majority of the posts on here that, taken for what it is, RoboCop 2 is a pretty good film. It doesn't have the story or characterisation of he first film, but in terms of action, it's pretty awesome. The stop-motion effects in the final battle are still among the most impressive special effects I've seen, they kept the Verhoeven-style satirical TV adverts, and RoboCain was just mental.

I'm guessing the production team knew that these aspects were the film's strengths, because apparently a wealth of plot and character scenes were cut out prior to release. It'd be nice to see those scenes, but at the end of the day the film's probably more fun without them, and it's miles better than most action films made today.

Miller gets the credit, but I think they did a lot of re-writes. There was supposed to be a seen where after Robocop drives by the Murphy's house he goes to a graveyard at night to visit the grave of Alex Murphy. There's meant to be a large internal battle going on within him.

He even had a little bit cameo in the film. The chemist/druggist guy in the trailer is Miller.

I don't think Robocop 2 is anywhere near as bad as what some people make out. Yes it is a brainless action flick that doesn't follow from the original anything like it should, yes it is a massive cash in.

However, I have seen far far worse movies with much higher ratings than this movie.

reply

I don't get the hate. It's definitely not as good as the first one but I still like it!

reply

I love it. It's a much better sequel than 3. Also, there seems to be so much hate for Hob(The kid villain), I thought he was great and it was a very bold move having such a young kid as a lead villain, and the thing is, nowadays, there are gangs like that and young kids are a part of them.
Who would have thought Robocop 2 would have been such a glimpse of future modern society. I think having the kid as a villain was one of the best things in the movie. Over all, I think it's a kick ass sequel

Bold was a child being shot dead ON SCREEN in T.A.P.S. That Macaulay Culkin pastiche was just stupid.

reply

Well here are some points:
1-murphys wife storyline is dropped(there are supposed to be more footage not released I think)
2-Robocops new directives are an odd inclusion to say the least
3-retarded storyline about a murder drug addicted cyborg(!!!) okay this is a bit funny but far from logical
4-The pacing is not good
5-Robo becoming Murphy in the end of the first film is almost forgotten here
6-The satire is gone and now the film is instead filled with jokes instead

reply

People that dislike this movie are nutz! Robocop 2 is one of the best comedies ever made. This movie is hysterical.
