He won for Dead Ringers, released 2 years earlier.
This was a total 'make-up' Oscar for being ignored previously on the other film (he wasn't even nominated for it, which was ridiculous).
Irons even thanks David Cronenberg (director of Dead Ringers) when accepting the Academy Award for this.
