A Confusing & Slow Paced Bore!

I had high hopes for Reversal of Fortune because I remember reading that Jeremy Irons won an Oscar for his performance as "one of the movie's best villains". I didn't see a villain at all, rather a timid and soft spoken coward.

The movie is also very confusing. I watched it with my friend Helen, and we both are older gals who knit when we screen afternoon VHS or DVDs. Today was a big head scratcher. The movie is about a wealthy woman played by Glenn Close, who has fallen into a coma. Her husband, Irons, has been accused of attempted murder. But he is able to convince a lawyer to get his case a retrial, and hopefully acquitted. What follows is such hazy dialogue that Helen and me both were tempted to turn off the movie and resume into a full blown sewing session.

Scenes that follow include the lawyer teaching some law students more about the trial. That Irons deserves a fair trial because he may be rich- but he also is possibly innocent. Scenes from the past showcase Close as a very manipulative and headstrong dominatrix, upset that her husband is having affairs behind her back but also determined to keep him married to her because she knows he's useless without her.

Then the climax- the movie doesn't give us one. He's acquitted due to there being sloppy evidence regarding the pill bottles and their labels. But it's so obvious that Glenn Close attempted suicide. There isn't one scene that convinced me that Claus was a villain or evil. He just came off dry, sarcastic and withdrawn. He wasn't happy with her so he cheated. Pretty simple. Why would he try to murder her?

A big disappointment.
