Nasty
Remember seeing this when it came out and thinking "christ! what a downer". Its just downright nasty...up there with Casualties of Wars...no upside at all, just casual sadism.
shareThat's what strikes me the most about this movie (I just watched it for the first time). It really is a 2-hour darkness-fest, with the notable exception of Kevin Costner fingerbanging Madeline Stowe. It's almost aggressively non-commercial. Not that that's a bad thing - I find the relative lack of comic relief refreshing in a movie like this.

If you look at the majority of movies released these days you'll find lots of "horror" (the slasher sort), adolescent humor involving any number of sexual and/or scatological functions, action films with the usual excessive shootings/car chases, etc. I recently surveyed a list of video releases from December 2009 through May 2010 and found three films I might care to see. I have rented one of these so far and was very disappointed. I suspect much of what is currently on offer out there will be more to your taste (previous posters) than mine. If Revenge is/was "dark," so be it. It was a relatively slow, deliberate telling of a damn good story, and I wish there were more of the same available. IMHO

Yup, you may just have to go to foreign films. Opens up a whole new world of fantastic storytelling.
