Searching For Similar POW Drama

I watched a really good three part drama on television when I was a kid. It was very similar to this except it involved an Australian or American POW that befriends a Japanese guard. It would have been made around the same time.

I believe it was set in New Guinea and there was a scene in the jungle where a squad has been completely blown to shreds by a mine. It made quite an impression on me at the time so I would love to see it again. If anyone has a suggestion as to what it might be please let me know.
