An Officer & a Pretty Woman

I saw Pretty Woman for the first time in ages last night and - for the first time - it struck me that the themes in Pretty Woman were similar to those in the earlier Richard Gere classic, An Officer and a Gentleman...right down to Gere rejecting a long term relationship in the last third of the movie before changing his mind and "rescuing" Paula / Vivian in the final scene.

What tipped me off, was when Gere bought the roses and Kit was right there (although she didn't recognise him). At first I thought it was a nod to "An Officer and Gentleman" (where Debra Winger's nasty friend sees Gere enter the factory before Winger does), but then it struck me that the ending of both movies was almost identical.

Nice comparison. It would’ve been better if Gear beat up the door man and then his best friend Costanza asked Julia’s roommate to marry him and move to his trailer in Oklahoma.

Hell, in a year his best friend Costanza will be floor manager!
