I was really put off by Julia Roberts' hairy arms in this film... Did women not take care of themselves in the 80s? 

Who the hell bothers to shave their arms?!

Ha!  A LOT of people do! It is extremely common/popular thing in Japan, including among men! 

On November 6, 2012 god blessed America...again. 

I've heard of people doing it, but it was always depicted as *extreme* where it was mentioned.

It sure sounds extreme to me! Why would anyone even want to shave their arms?!

Its annoying enough to have shave legs (takes forever!) and underarms (Everyone ought to do that lol!)
Or for men to have to shave beards, clip nose hair etc. etc.

But arms?! No way.

I have noticed most hairy women have an incredible head of hair! Julia's hair is very thick and healthy!!

It was revealed (MANY years later) that most of Julia's hair was not her own!

She wore lots of extensions, hairpieces, sometimes even a wig.

I suspected as much once she got that first haircut that *shocked* the media so much. Suddenly she has shoulder-length, rather thin hair!

I was like "Ummmm, where is that famous "Julia" hair??"

From what I read at the time, basically all of them before that real-life shoulder-length haircut.

But even before that was revealed, it was obvious in films like Sleeping With the Enemy.

Julia's graduation photo from Campbell High School in Smyrna, Georgia, from 1985 is on the web and her hair is just as long and thick and curly in that photo as it was in "Mystic Pizza" and "Pretty Woman," except you can not be certain of the color because the photo is in black and white and was taken without a hair light.

Obviously, fiatlux-1 knows something that I missed.

The hairy arms in the start when we see her in bed waking up is not Julia. It's her body double, it's not Julia's body in the beginning of the film in the black underwear. Definitely not Julia or when she's pulling a dress down over her head & we see her bum when she's buying new clothes. Julia doesn't have a shape like that
