I thought he was the best in the movie. Very cool emotionally and in control as the defense lawyer. The last line he delivered to Sabich was in perfect tone "I believe Larren today did what he thought was just. You tell me, Rusty. Was justice done?"
I really liked the performances of Harrison Ford and Bonnie Bedelia in this film but I agree with posters here that the very talented Raul Julia as Rusty's lawyer Sandy Stern really made the film. Wonderful performance and a good film.
Yes, ditto, Julia is The Man. The only thing that surprised me was that his character, the astute and experienced hotshot criminal defense lawyer Alejandro 'Sandy' Stern, wasn't in his infinite wisdom able to instinctually ascertain Rusty's guilt or innocence as implied by his concluding question.
But of course that's not criticism of Raul Julia's portrayal, which was simply masterful.

He truly did. Without him, I think it would have been a rather ordinary thriller. HFord's character didn't have the oomph like he gets in other movies.
I thought Raul Julia was just wonderful. I loved it when he looked directly at Rusty (after the dismissal) and said, "Tell me, Rusty, was justice done?"
I also loved his cross-examination of "Painless." It was masterful.
I don't think he's really asking to find out. He's putting the question out there because he knows the answer is so inescapable that he can leave it to Ford to answer it himself. (i.e.: since Ford is innocent, it's not really bad that the judge freed him)
He`s outstanding, understated yet powerful and fiercely intelligent; almost imperious. Makes ya really believe he could win just about any case thrown his way. Definitely should have been nominated for best supporting actor - he`s much better than Garcia in Godfather 3 and Pacino in Dick Tracy, in any case.
