This film has one of Streep's very best performances.

She's a comic genius.

I don't know. Seems to me as if she can't play loopy characters. She has all the mannerisms down, but I find it hard to believe her as a non-linear type of person. She just seems too focused. Even when she does do women on the edge, as in French Lt's etc, Sophie, there is always a rationality behind it that manifests itself eventually. Shirley MC on the other hand can not not do loopy characters. I was thinking also of Angelina J. in "girl interrupted" where she had it down pat.

I think Meryl is wonderful in this - heartbreaking, but so, so funny, too.

reply

Agreed. It's so wonderful seeing her and Shirley McClaine

reply

Yeah, I agree with what you've said here. I especially enjoyed the way you phrased your observation... but I find it hard to believe her as a non-linear type of person. Yes. Definitely.

I like Meryl a lot. But I don't think she's made me laugh more than a couple times at most. Shirley, on the other hand, made me laugh several times in "Terms of Endearment". And her performances in "Desperate Characters" (1971) and "The Possession of Joel Delaney" (1972) are, IMO, two of the best performances I've ever seen. And while Meryl could have pulled off the character in DC, she couldn't have come close to Shirley's mounting terror in the 1972 horror film.

I loved this movie. Loved Streep and MacLaine in it.

I just popped the movie in, and I came on here to see what people are saying about it, and I liked the poster who said I find it hard to believe her [Streep] as a non-linear type of person. and I was getting ready to totally agree with them and then I found out that I already did 2 years ago.

There are few comic geniuses in the world, and Streep isn't one of them. I know, Streep is tagged with such grandiose adjectives as part of the flow. Yeah, Mary, Carol, and Lucy have nothing on some woman who lucked out because she could do mimicry, then collected all of this after-praise for no reason.

reply

I agree. Meryl is an outstanding mimic; on this score, there seems to be almost nothing she can't do. Maybe it's that she has way too healthy self-esteem to be very funny. She seems like a very nice lady in interviews. She's just not inherently funny.

Yes, Mr H, she has to work at it, so it is forced or fake funny and she isn't a natural comedic actress. She mimics the comedy, just like she does with most aspects of her performances. Not to sell her short with her drama skills, but like you have commented on her healthy dose of self-esteem, most of it comes from her ego head-space.

She was fantastic. Did she get any awards for this?

reply

I wouldn't call her a comic genius or any sort of genius for that matter, but I do agree that this is one of her performances that I like because it didn't have the usual Streep mannerisms that irritate the heck out of me.
