This film has one of Streep's very best performances.

I don't know. Seems to me as if she can't play loopy characters. She has all the mannerisms down, but I find it hard to believe her as a non-linear type of person. She just seems too focused. Even when she does do women on the edge, as in French Lt's etc, Sophie, there is always a rationality behind it that manifests itself eventually. Shirley MC on the other hand can not not do loopy characters. I was thinking also of Angelina J. in "girl interrupted" where she had it down pat.

I like Meryl a lot. But I don't think she's made me laugh more than a couple times at most. Shirley, on the other hand, made me laugh several times in "Terms of Endearment". And her performances in "Desperate Characters" (1971) and "The Possession of Joel Delaney" (1972) are, IMO, two of the best performances I've ever seen. And while Meryl could have pulled off the character in DC, she couldn't have come close to Shirley's mounting terror in the 1972 horror film.

shareI just popped the movie in, and I came on here to see what people are saying about it, and I liked the poster who said I find it hard to believe her [Streep] as a non-linear type of person. and I was getting ready to totally agree with them and then I found out that I already did 2 years ago.
