What an odd character for Dreyfuss to play...

His character was too small to have an actor of Dreyfuss magnitude to play it. I bet major scenes involving him, wound up on the cutting room floor. His ego certainly would have never allowed such a small part.

I know, I wondered about that too. It's amazing the cast of this movie, how many Oscar winners were in it? Streep, Maclaine, Dreyfuss, Hackman, I feel like I'm leaving someone out. Of course Bening went on to have several nominations. . .

Agreed, a lot of great names in this film but I'm surprised at how average this movie is, everyone in this is in fact an "odd character", I don't get the casting choices they made. I mean, they're all great actors but I just don't think it really worked in this movie, there really wasn't enough chemistry between Maclaine and Streep to carry this film, and it seemed really odd that both of them were old enough to be grandmothers. I suppose it just goes to show that having a lot of talent in a film doesn't guarantee that it will be good.

I've read plenty of lame comments here on imdb, but yours was one for the books. Your remark that MacLaine and Streep "were old enough to be grandmothers".....how did you reach this decision? MacLaine was only 55-56 while filming this movie (and was playing a character a bit older) - and yes, one could be a grandmother at that age. Streep, however, was only 40 (and was playing younger) - how many 40 year old grandmothers do you know? Either you are a teenager that thinks anyone over 25 is ancient or you're a member of a Honey Boo Boo type of family where they begin reproducing at 12.

Well, maybe he was paid enough to do it. Also, it was for Mike Nichols, who was a popular director. Two actors whose stuff did end up on the cutting room floor were Jerry Orbach and John Cusack. It is also ironic that he plays a doctor who is treating Maclaine after crashing into a tree drunk since he did that in real life.

This is one of those movies were the actors ended up being famouse after it came out, like Dazed and Confused and the Freaks and Geeks show.

Which actors exactly are you talking about? Cos' Dreyfuss was famous long before this movie came out.

Amen. What a stupid-assed comment that was; posters come off better when they do it sober.
