I watched this on TV back in 1990 and taped it and watched it over and over again but haven't seen it in like 15 years. I can't remember, is it a musical? I seem to only remember songs during the opera performances. Am I wrong?

No, but it is based on the book of the Yeston/Kopit musical. It is very opera heavy though.
