Could it really happen?

Yeah, I know there are plenty of medically-unqualified people who have falsely claimed to be doctors, and I suppose it's possible that someone could steal the identity of a deceased doctor, but surely Matthew would have been found out a lot earlier than he was in this movie. Even in the pre-Internet era.

I understand someone who failed their medical degree tried to get back into medical school under a false identity, but frankly there are enough 'legitimate' medical professionals, like Harold Shipman, murdering their patients to start worrying about anyone pretending to be a doctor. In fact it's arguable that someone so preoccupied in covering their tracks would go out of their way to be the very best doctor they could be in order to risk being caught out. They wouldn't be as blasé as some qualified medical professionals about 'accidental deaths' on their watch.

Anyway, it would probably never happen. We can all breathe a sigh of relief for the medical elite would see past a lower class 'oik' who 'didn't belong with them' straight away and thus spare our lives. Thank goodness for snobbery.

Well, the case of "Doctor" Milan Brych is proof indeed that a quack can falsely claim to be a qualified doctor and get away with it, for a few years at any rate.

But my thoughts were that assuming the identity of a doctor who was known to be deceased was a very weak point in Matthew's plan. Surely when the hospital employed him there would have been checks made on his identity and credentials, and at that point it would have been discovered that this "Dr. Simon Hennessey" had recently been killed in a car accident.
