shareHe wasn't exactly shut out of the family fortune. As Patty said, his family paid him to leave them alone, presumably because of his "out of control" behavior.
Hayes didn't need money; he conned people and tore them down because he enjoyed it. He was a psychopath. There's still debate about how people come to be that way. As the other poster said, he may have been born like that.
To me, he was from a family rich enough to pander to some of his eccentricities. This made him stay relatively carefree, responsibility-free and eccentric enough to regard life as a game and people merely its players. He could afford to eventually lose but he got a sick thrill from pretending he was normal middle class and then taking advantage of the working middle class as they exhaust themselves with a legal system that partially protects the right to possession by being a tennant, and right to privacy and silence when confronted outside of a court of law. It was partially class warfare then , separate from manners or intellect. It makes him sociopathic - he possibly fakes being a psychopath. He could just afford to be like one. Maybe he hoped to one day drive a landlord away , by getting THEM imprisoned for attacking him, so that he could one day win squatter's rights and then sell the property, keeping him in accommodation and just enough money. He was a leech, a parasite, possibly all because he was easily bored, perhaps didn't get the grades that his good early education should/could have ended up with and his pseudo- bohemian mind, part lazy, part tensed up, possibly had some unconscious resentment of middle class strivers.

shareI have not watched this move for a very long time but wasn't he like this anyway and his family didn't even want him around?
People will say well something would have made him like this it could be anything a lot of children from wealth go off the rails for many reasons.
Wasn't it as well he was like this when renting because it was a big scam he would target people and end up owning property for cheap and then making profit?
