How good is this movie?

This is one of my favorites, I own the Blu-Ray and I have seen it a number of times.

But my question relates to where might this movie fit overall among all the others? And I don't mean an exact number, but "generally".

Is it in the top 50%? Or top 25%? Or top 10%?

Or what? Just want some opinions from fans who appreciate all kinds of movies.

For me I would place it probably in the top 5% of the 4000+ movies I have seen.

My response is, why does it matter? Do you need validation for what you enjoy? You say it is one of your favorites; what more do you need?

Everyone's experience with film, literature, or art is completely unique. Sure, some people will share those experiences; but, never in exactly the same way, because their brains are wired differently. You can spend a lot of time looking to other people to validate your tastes or you can decide to be secure enough to not care, as long as you derive pleasure from the art. The latter tends to bring greater long term happiness.

Meanwhile, this is also one of my favorite films and one of my top 5 French films. I love the story, I love the staging, I love the music. Some people don't. To which, I say, well, ice cream would be boring if everyone loved chocolate.

Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!

Absolutely one of our favourite films of all times, in our house. Makes into the top ten or twenty for sure.

It would probably be in my top 50 percent, or perhaps my top 25 percent. This is a stunningly beautiful film that works quite well most of the way through as a crime thriller as well as a love story, but it falls apart a bit in the final quarter, which I find inscrutable. 8/10 stars from me.
